Chin up! 「元気を出せ!」「がんばれ!」 [単語・表現]
前回 man up 「男らしいところを見せる」という表現を取り上げたが、何となく (keep one's) chin up を連想したので、短くメモしておきたい。「アゴを出す」というと「弱る、疲れる」だが、この英語は「元気を失わない」「めげない」ということである。
- keep one's chin up
to maintain a cheerful disposition in spite of difficulties, disappointments, etc. Also, chin up.
(Dictionary.com Unabridged based on the Random House Dictionary)
- informal Remain cheerful in difficult circumstances: keep your chin up, we’re not lost yet
(Oxford Dictionaries)
- remain brave and confident in a difficult situation; don't despair or worry too much.
"I know that things have been difficult for you recently, but keep your chin up. Everything will be better soon."
(ESL Idiom Page)
- chin up!
informal something you say to someone in a difficult situation in order to encourage them to be brave and try not to be sad: Chin up! It'll soon be the weekend.
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus)
名詞の chin-up は pull-up と同じで、「懸垂」ということである。
- an exercise in which you hold a bar that is above your head and pull yourself up off the ground
(Macmillan Dictionary)
- raise oneself while hanging from one's hands until one's chin is level with the support bar
(Vocabulary.com)
- to do chin-ups
to pull oneself up on a bar, until the chin is level with the bar; do pull-ups (gymnastics)
(Collins English Dictionary)
懸垂のように、あごを上向きの状態に保っておく、つまり顔をあげてしっかり前を向く、ということで「元気を出す」「がんばる」、と覚えておけばいいかもしれない。といっても懸垂を続けるのは苦しいことではあるが。
ついでに「アゴを出す」は、和英辞典を見ると get exhausted のほか worn out、tired out などと書かれている。
