A barking dog seldom bites. と「弱い犬ほどよく吠える」

前回の His bark is worse than his bite. からの連想だが、 Barking dogs seldom bite, という言い回しがある。「やたらと脅しをかけても、本当に実行する奴はめったにはいない」、だからそんなに恐れることはない、ということになる。

One's bark is worse than one's bite. 同様、ウェブを見るとこの表現にちなんだマンガがいろいろ見つかる。

また、seldom の代わりに never を使った例もある。韓国で2000年に製作されたコメディ映画に、英語の題として Barking Dogs Never Bite が使われていた。

「吠える犬はめったにかまない」を裏返しにしたようなのが、「弱い犬ほどよく吠える」である。A barking dog...の訳にこれを当てているケースもある。

ただ、英語の言い回しに「やたらと吠えるのは弱い奴」「怒鳴る奴ほど、実は気が弱かったり実力がなかったりする」というニュアンスがあるのだろうか。

以前、Practice makes perfect. を「習うより慣れよ」とするのは誤りだ、という指摘があると書いたことがある（→「住めば都」は There's no place like home. か）（→名言やことわざの学習について）。ことわざに限らないが、やはり安易な１対１対応は英語学習では禁物であろう。
