"The Look" ～ローレン・バコールのセクシーな眼差し [映画・ドラマと英語]
ローレン・バコールが亡くなった。ハンフリー・ボガートと共演した白黒映画をかなり前に見たことがあるが、バコールといえば、何といってもあの独特の上目づかいである。英文記事を読むと "The Look" と名づけられていたことわかる。
ハリウッド黄金時代の往年の女優とはいえ、英語圏ではこのニックネームを見聞きすればピンと来る人は今でもそれなりにいるのだろうと想像する。

だから alluring （そそる）、sultry (なまめかしい、あぶない） であることを狙って come-hither look （こっちへ来て、私をどうぞ、という色目）を意図的につくったわけではなかった、ということになる。
なお、上に出てきた nerve だが、単数では have a nerve のように「ずぶとさ」「あつかましさ」を表すが、複数になるともっと大胆になるのかと思いきや、「神経過敏」「不安」「緊張」になるのがおもしろい。先の look/looks とはイメージ的に逆というべきか。
