stock character 「ステレオタイプ的な登場人物」「ありがちなキャラクター」

前回書いた femme fatale に現実の世界で出会う経験をした人（果報者？）はそんなに多くないはずで、だから映画や小説で好んで描かれるのだろう、と凡人の私は勝手に思っているが、Wikipedia でこの言葉を見たら、次のように説明が始まっていた。

- A femme fatale is a stock character of a mysterious and seductive woman whose charms ensnare her lovers, often leading them into compromising, dangerous, and deadly situations. She is an archetype of literature and art.

この文章に出てきた stock character について少し書いてみよう。

stock は「在庫、ストック、たくわえ」だが、形容詞にすると「持ち合わせの」「レパートリーの」「決まった役柄の」「ありふれた」「お定まりの」という意味がある。そこで、文芸作品などに登場する「常套的な人物」、ということになる。うしろの文にある archetype とも共通するものがあるといえるかもしれない。

英語の辞書では、次のように説明されている。

- a character in literature, theater, or film of a type quickly recognized and accepted by the reader or viewer and requiring no development by the writer.

- A stock character is a stereotypical fictional character whom audiences readily recognize from frequent recurrences in a particular literary tradition. Stock characters are archetypal characters distinguished by their flatness; as a result, they tend to be easy targets for parody and to be criticized as cliches.

Wikipedia は、別途 "List of stock characters" という項を設けている。ここでは、"Absent-minded professor" とか "Supervillain"、"Spoiled child" といった多数の「型」を設けて、それぞれ典型的な（ほとんどは架空の）キャラクターがあげられている。

国際性？がありそうな例、あるいは私にもピンときたキャラクターとしては、

Lovers - Romeo & Juliet, Tony and Maria (West Side Story)

Monster - Godzilla, Frankenstein's monster, King Kong

Superhero - Superman, Spider-Man, Batman

Holmesian detective - Sherlock Holmes, Columbo, Hercule Poirot

Wikipedia で取り上げられている「型」の中には、以下のように、これまでこのブログで取り上げた言葉もあり、stock character とつながるものであることがわかる。

Sidekick - Robin, Dr. Watson, Sancho Panza　(→the Dynamic Duo, sidekick など （「バットマン」）)

Damsel in distress　（→damsel in distress　「ヒロイン危機一髪」)

Redshirt - Star Trek　（→「やられ役」を英語で何という？）

なお下の２つのエントリを見なおしたら、そこで引用していた例文にも stock character を使ったものがあった。

しかし実のところ、この "List of stock characters" にあげられているのは、英語圏（特にアメリカ）の文化を知らないと、何のことかわからない人物ばかりだ。例えば、femme fatale の項に出ているのは、Ruth Wonderly, Xenia Onatopp, Poison Ivy となっている。ステレオタイプどころか、「それって誰？」である。

ということで、stock character とはいうものの、共通理解がないと、とうてい「おなじみ」のキャラクターとはいえなくなってしまう、ということになりそうだ。
