Rise and shine! 「さっさと起きろ！」

前回、「秀でる」という意味の shine について自分の学習ノートに書き留めていた実例を引用したが、rise and shine という表現もメモしていたのを見つけたので、ついでに取り上げたい。

こちらは前回の shine と違って実例は書いておらず、どこでこれが目にとまったのかは覚えていない。辞書にあった説明を引用しよう。

- （寝床から)元気よく起きる（命令形または不定詞で用いる；wakey-wakey rise and shine ということもある）

rise-and-shine time のように、ハイフンでつなげて形容詞として使うこともできる。

rise だけでも「起床する」の意味があるが、shine をつけることで強調する、「起きてシャキッとしろ」といった雰囲気が出る、ということだろうか。

もう少し詳しい説明がないかと思っていたら、Phrase Finder というサイトに、おもしろい記述があった。

- The earliest use of 'rise and shine' in print allude to a biblical reference, in Isaiah 60:1. King James Version, 1611, gives that as:
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

いかにも口語らしい表現だと思っていたが、このサイトの説明によると、実は17世紀の欽定訳聖書にさかのぼることが可能、というわけである。最初は「神の栄光」をたたえるといった宗教的な文脈、のちには太陽の描写にも使われたとのこと。そのうちに、兵士の起床の合図になったという。その際の shine は、軍靴を毎朝磨いて光らせる、という意味だそうで、「シャキッとする」ということでは、という私の想像はハズレだったことになる。

ウェブを見ると、rise and shine を使ったステッカーや表示などの画像がいろいろあっておもしろい。"Fine, I'll rise...but I won't shine." と書かれた眠そうなネコの写真もあって、笑ってしまった。

追記：
アメリカのテレビドラマ「刑事コロンボ」のエピソード By Dawn's Early Light （邦題「祝砲の挽歌」）を見ていたら、陸軍学校の校長が生徒たちに朝の集合を命じる場面で　”Shoes shined" という号令をかけていた。
