hit the hay (sack)、make hay while the sun shines

前回 rise and shine を取り上げた連想で、hit the hay について短く書く。ずっと昔、私が初めてアメリカに滞在した時に実際に聞いて耳で覚えた表現である。hay の代わりに sack でもいい。

「干し草」あるいは「寝袋」を hit するということで、何となく想像がつくが、go to bed とか go to sleep ということである。

ついでに hay と前回の shine をくっつけると make hay while the sun shines というイディオムが頭に浮かぶ。「好機を逃さない」という意味になる。数年前にも短く触れたことがあった（→今を楽しめ (carpe diem, seize the day)）。

make hay (of) だけでも、「チャンスをものにする」「有利になるように活かす、うまく利用する」を意味する。
