open (the) kimono 「キモノを開く」って何だ？

先の連休にウェブの英文をいろいろ眺めていたら、タイトルに opening their kimonos という表現が含まれた記事が目にとまった。以前何かで接した記憶があるがすっかり忘れていたので、取り上げてみることにしたい。

「着物を開く」「着物をはだける」って何だ、と思うが、辞書を見ると open one's kimono として、「胸のうちを明かす」「計画していることを明かす」というスラングである、と書かれている。

- open (up) one's kimono
Sl. to reveal what one is planning. (From the computer industry, referring especially to the involvement of the Japanese in this field.)
Sam isn't one to open his kimono much when it comes to new products.

また、kimono の前に定冠詞を入れた open the kimono として、次のような語義があげられている。

つまり、「会社の財務状況についての情報を外部に明らかにする」「企業の財務データをオープンにする」というようなことになる。open kimono でもこの意味で使う例が見つかるので、the のあるなしで意味が明確に違うというものでもなさそうだが、確かかどうかはわからない。

私が連休に目にした記事は、Why Corporate Executives Talk About 'Opening Their Kimonos'というタイトルで、情報収集と英語学習どちらの点でもおすすめできるNPR（National Public Radio）というアメリカの公共ラジオネットワークのサイトに掲載されていたものだ。

文中で "To disclose information about the inner workings of a company" と説明しているこの表現について、いろいろなことが書かれていて面白いが、この記事によると、open the kimono が話題になる理由のひとつに、性差別的・人種差別的な意味合いを感じる人がいる、ということがあるのだそうだ。

使われた言葉自体からも想像がつくことではあるが、オンラインの Urban Dictionary も open the kimono の項で

- A 1990's phrase that means that everyone should share data. There should be no secrets between those in the meeting. As in a Japanese wife showing her husband her naked body by opening her silk robe or kimono.

としているように、エロチックな連想が働く、というわけである。

NPRの記事には、「ゲイシャ」への言及や、着物は別に女性だけが着るものではないという指摘、また語源についての諸説などが盛り込まれている。関連記事にも多数リンクが張られている。

ということで、さらに詳しいことは一連のウェブ記事を参照いただきたいが、「日本語が英語に取り入れられて使われている」と単純に喜んでいるだけではいかないようで、複雑な気持ちになった。いずれにせよ、日本人のほうから嬉々として使うのは望ましくないスラングといえそうだ。
