twang 「ビョーンという音」「鼻音」

前回取り上げた envelope のフランス語風発音は、en- が鼻にかかるのが特徴だが、連想したのが twang である。「鼻音」という意味で、nasal twang という言い方もあるが、私が最初にこの単語を覚えたのは別の意味だった。

私はまず上記の 1 の意味で覚えたのだが、母音は口を大きく開けてアとエを同時に出すような音である。大げさに発音してみると、いかにもそれらしく、「ビョーン」「ベーン」という音が本当に聞こえてくるようではないか。

実例をメモしていたはず、と思って自分の学習ファイルを検索してみたが見つからなかったので、辞書から定義や例文を引用しよう。

「ビョーン」という音を模してできた言葉で、最初は弦の音、そこから（私にはつながりがいまひとつわからないのだが）「鼻音」について使われるようになったという。
