within grabbing distance 「手が届くところに」 （日米TPP交渉大詰め）

日米間のTPP交渉は今回の協議でも結着しなかったが、大詰めであることは間違いないようだ。アメリカ政府の高官が、妥結は grabbing distance にあると述べたという記事が目にとまった。「手の届く距離」という日本語に似ていて、おもしろい。

発言したのは、アメリカ国務省のラッセル次官補。海外通信社の記事から引用してみよう。

- A trade deal between Japan and the United States is within reach, the U.S. State Department's top diplomat for Asia, Danny Russel, said on Monday.
"We are within grabbing distance of an agreement with the Japanese," Russel told the Council on Foreign Relations.

同じロイターの記事にある within reach と違って、within grabbing distance はまとまった成句というほどではないのか、私が使っている辞書には載せているものはなかったが、ウェブで検索すると、それほど数は多くないがヒットがあった。

物理的に形のあるモノが近い距離にある場合に使った例が目立つが、今回のアメリカ政府高官の発言をみると、そうでないものにも比喩的に使うことができるということになりそうだ。

なお、同じ「手が届く」でも、年齢について表現する場合について、かなり前に取り上げたことがある（→「～歳の大台に乗る」「～歳に手が届く」）。

ついでに、上記 AFP が引用している次官補の発言にある lynchpin は linchpin とも綴るが、これもかつて書いたことがあるので、参考までに記しておきたい（→linchpin, fringe time など）。
