Famous last words! 「そんなわけないだろ」「よくいうよ」

その昔、外国人同士の会話を近くで聞いていて出会った表現である。間違いなく "Famous last words." と言っていたが、やさしい単語ばかりなのに何のことかわからない。あとで辞書を引いて、まとまった言い回しだと知った。前回話題にしたSF小説 Redshirts にも出てきたので、取り上げてみよう。

といっても、この小説での例はそのまま書いても状況を説明しないとわかりづらいので、引用は見合わせて辞書に頼ることにしよう。

英和辞典には、「そんなばかなことあるものか」「それはどうかな」「そうでしょうとも」といった訳語が並んでいる。「相手の自信ありげな言葉に対して不信、皮肉などを表す」（ランダムハウス英和大辞典）というような補足説明もある。

しかしこれだけでは心もとないので、用例も載っている英語圏の辞書から引用しよう。最初の例文は、安倍総理が2020年オリンピック招致に向けて行ったプレゼンテーションで福島第一原発事故に言及した時のことを思い出してしまう。

私自身は、こうした説明を読んで「なるほど」と思うものの、残念ながら自分から自然に口をついて出る表現ではない。単語自体はこんな簡単なのに、理解語にとどまっているわけで、外国語の難しさを痛感する。

famous last words がなぜこうした意味になるのか、上記 OALD 程度の説明ではよくわからない。The Phrase Finder というサイトの記述を見ると、有名人が亡くなるにあたって遺した、皮肉のきいた言葉を指していたのが、広い意味で使われるようになった、ということらしい。
