kick the bucket 「死ぬ」、bucket list 「死ぬまでにやっておきたいこと」

前回は Redshirts というSF小説から buy the farm というスラングを取り上げたが、同じく「死ぬ」を表すインフォーマルな言葉といえば、私が頭に思い浮かべるのは kick the bucket である。

首に輪っかの縄 noose をつけて脚の下のバケツを蹴るという、自殺あるいは処刑の方法を指している、というような説明を読んだ記憶があり、その時はなるほどと思ったが、ウェブにある記述を見ると、どうやらこれは疑わしいようだ。

ここでの bucket はバケツではなく、動物を屠殺する際に吊るす木の棒のことで（古いフランス語の buquet に由来するという）、死ぬ時に動物が暴れて棒を蹴ることからできた表現というのが有力な説だという。

もうひとつ、この表現から派生したという bucket list というスラングがある。「死ぬまでにやりとげたいもろもろのこと」「生きているうちにやっておきたいあれこれ」という意味である。

私は未見だが、ジャック・ニコルソンとモーガン・フリーマンが主演した同名の映画（邦題「最高の人生の見つけ方」）で人口に膾炙した表現だそうだ。
