two cents 「意見、考え」 [数にちなむ表現]
前回は twopence の発音について書いたが、この単語から連想したのが two cents である。my などをつけると「(自分の)意見」ということになる。put in one's two cents は「自分の意見を言う」で、~two cents worth とすることもある。
- "My two cents" (2¢) and its longer version "put my two cents in" is a United States (US) idiomatic expression, taken from the original English idiom expression: to put in "my two pennies worth" or "my two-penn'orth."
It is used to preface the tentative stating of one’s opinion. By deprecating the opinion to follow -- suggesting its value is only two cents, a very small amount -- the user of the phrase hopes to lessen the impact of a possibly contentious statement, showing politeness and humility.

もうひとつ、Wiktionary には興味深い記述があった。
- two pennies' worth
(idiomatic, Britain, colloquial) One's opinion or thoughts.
That's just my two pennies' worth; you can believe what you like.
Usage notes
The US-originated terms Two cents and two cents' worth have gained some currency in the UK at the expense of the native two pennies' worth even though the cent is not a unit of currency there.

Two cents and two cents' worth have eclipsed the native two pennies' worth in England even though the cent is not a unit of currency there.

つまりアメリカ産の two cents を使った表現が本家を食ってイギリスでも使われるようになっているということになり、おもしろい。
イギリス英語由来であるのはいいとして、そもそも貨幣(の単位)が「意見」に使われるようになった背景や理由はわからないままであった。ご存知の方がいらしたら教えていただけたら幸いである。
