at sixes and sevens 「混乱して」

数字の64が入った表現を前回取り上げたついでに、久しぶりに“数にちなむ表現”を自分の学習ノートで検索したら、表題の実例をメモしていた。グレアム・グリーンの名作スパイ小説「ヒューマン・ファクター」で拾ったものである。

帰宅した主人公が、妻の出迎えがないなど普段と様子が違うのに気づいて狼狽する。少し経って姿を見せた妻に対して次のように言う。

- I was worried. Everything seemed at sixes and sevens tonight when I came in. You weren't here.

「混乱して」「（人が）途方に暮れて」「（物が）乱雑で」「（意見などが）ばらばらで、不一致で」などと英和辞典にある。

英語圏の辞書にある説明も引用しよう。old-fashioned in US とあるので、アメリカでは古い表現とみなされているようだ。グレアム・グリーンはイギリスの作家である。

不思議に思うのは、なぜこんな意味が生まれたのかということだが、

- さいころ賭博からか（6, 7は高位点数）; または 6+7=13 で不吉な数を表すことからか

しかし、英語圏のサイトには似て非なる説が載っていた。

- The phrase probably derives from a complicated dice game called "hazard". It is thought that the expression was originally "cinque and sice" (from the French numerals for five and six). These were considered to be the riskiest numbers to shoot for (to "set on"), and those who tried for them were considered careless or confused.

つまり、hazard というゲームでは５と６がもっともハイリスクだが、この数字はフランス語で「サンク」と「スィス」のように発音されるので、これを英語の six と seven に聞き違えた、ということになる。

とはいえ、そんなことあるのかね、とも思ってしまった。そもそもなぜここにフランス語が出てくるのか、Wikipedia にある Hazard (game) の項の記述によると、このゲームの名前自体が古フランス語に由来するそうである。

そうなんですか。いつも勉強になります。
Hazardは多分フランス語のhasardで、運とか偶然と言う意味です。5と6は、現在ではcinq, six と綴りますね。

Kazさん、hazard (hasard) についての説明ありがとうございました。数字の綴りは、私も大学でフランス語をかじったことがありまして（赤点を取りましたが）違うなと思ったのですが、そのまま引用しました。

さいころの数を指すときだけ、古フランス語にちなんで
ace, deuce, trey, cater, cinque, sice
と数えることがあります。
エース、デュース、トレイ、ケイト、シンク、サイスですね

ゲームのhazardはアラビア語のaz-zahr(さいころ、عززهر)に由来されているそうです
