dressed to the nines (dressed to kill) 「服をビシっと決めて」 [数にちなむ表現]
前回の at sixes and sevens 「混乱して」からの連想で、to the nines という表現を思い出したので取り上げたい。「完璧に」「見事に」「念入りに」といった意味である。up to... と up をつけても良い。
何をきっかけに知ったのかは覚えておらず、そもそも「そういえばこんな表現があったな」程度のあやふやな記憶しかない。自分の英語学習ファイルを検索したが実例のメモはなかったので、辞書を引いてみた。
服装とからめた用例や説明が目立つのに気がつく。

辞書によっては dressed (up) to the nines を見出しにして、"(informal) wearing very elegant or formal clothes" (OALD) などと説明している。「フォーマルな服装をきちんと着こなしている」といった感じだろう。
また、類義語として dressed to kill をあげている辞書もある。

ここでの kill は「悩殺」という日本語も連想するが、「魅了する」、また「（話が）おもしろくて笑いころげさせる」という意味である。
to the nines に戻ると、なぜ「９」が使われているのか。「ジーニアス英和大辞典」には「９が完全を表すことから」とあり、上記の The American Heritage Idioms Dictionary は
- The phrase to the nines in the sense of “superlative” dates from the late 1700s and its original meaning has been lost, the most likely theory is that it alludes to the fact that nine, the highest single-digit numeral, stands for “best.”
としている。most likely としているのでそうだと断定はできないということになり、私の電子辞書に収録されている Collins COBUILD Dictionary of Idioms にも
- dressed to the nine "There have been many explanations offered for the origin of this expression. Most related to the number nine in some way, but none has been generally accepted."
とあるだけだ。
