「糸電話」を英語で何というか

週末にアメリカのテレビドラマをDVDで観ていたら、「糸電話」にあたると思われる表現が出てきた。子どものおもちゃ、あるいは理科の教材を除けば日常生活でひんぱんに使う言葉ではないだろうが、おもしろいと思ったので短くメモしておこう。

SFドラマ「スタートレック・ディープ・スペース・ナイン」のあるエピソードで、宇宙ステーションの通信システムが使えなくなった時の会話である。

- A: Well, what do we use? Cups and a long string?
B: We'll have to improvise.

なるほど、と思った。次に和英辞典を調べてみると、a string telephone （研究社英和大辞典）とある。これは日本語と事実上同じなので、思いつきやすそうだ。

次に、これらをインターネットで検索し直してみると、さらに次のような言い方や表現がヒットした。

- talk through a string telephone

- get the cup-and-string telephone to work

- a "telephone" made with two cups and a long string

- talking to someone using two cups and a long string

- make your own tin can and string (or cup and string) telephone

そして、Wikipedia には、tin can telephone という項目があった。記述は次のように始まっている。

- A tin can telephone is a type of acoustic (non-electrical) speech-transmitting device made up of two tin cans, paper cups or similarly shaped items attached to either end of a taut string or wire.

日本語では「糸電話」くらいしか思い浮かばないが、英語は何を指しているかがわかれば、固定した言い方でなくてもいいようだ。
