air (scare) quotes ～「いわゆる」を表す二本指のジェスチャー [英語文化のトリビア]
先日、通勤電車に乗った直後に目に留まった液晶広告に、登場人物が両手で「ピースサイン」を顔の両脇につくる姿が映っていた。これを見て、air quotes と呼ばれるダブルクォーテーションマークを示すジェスチャーを連想したので取り上げてみたい。
double quotation marks (または double quotes) は、発言や原典からの引き写しのように、言葉をそのまま (verbatim) 引用したことを示すのに使われる。文字通り「引用符」である。
しかしそれ以外に、「自分はそうは思っていないのだが」「字面はこうなっているが実は怪しいのでは」といった、疑念や皮肉などの含みを持たせるためにこの符号をつける場合がある。so-called という単語、また日本語の「いわゆる」にもこうしたニュアンスがあるが、それに似ている。この用法が scare quotes といわれるもので、そのポーズを air quotes と呼ぶ。
ジェスチャーとしては、顔のそばに両手を立てて∨サインを作った上で人差し指と中指の先をクキクキっと曲げる。これが二重引用符をまねているわけである。よくわからなければインターネット上にいろいろ画像があるのでお確かめいただきたい。
なお冒頭に書いた映像の動作は、再び車内に流れた時にしっかり見たら、二本指をチョキチョキさせる「カニさんのポーズ」であることがわかり、やはり引用符や air quotes とは関係なかった（寒い日にエアコン暖房の効いた部屋でカニ鍋を食べるという、某電機メーカーのコマーシャルだった）。
英語圏の辞書の定義を引用しよう。まずは scare quotes である。

なおイギリス英語では double quotes の代わりに single quotes がよく使われ、scare quotes の場合も同様のようだ。ついでに、引用符の中にさらに引用符を入れる時（日本語でいえば「こう『書く』場合」）は、アメリカ英語はシングルクォーテーションを中に入れるのに対しイギリス英語ではダブルクォーテーションが内側に来る。またカンマやピリオドを引用符の中に置くか外に置くかも英米で逆になることが多い。あまり教えられていないようだが、押さえておきたい事項だと思う。
さらについでだが、先に書いたように、so-called には単純な「いわゆる」という意味のほかに疑念や不信を表すことがある。英和辞典にも記述されていることで、こちらも気をつけたい事項といえるだろう。
