break the Internet 「ネットを騒がせる、お祭り騒ぎになる」 [辞書に載っていない表現]
先日に続いて、Lake Superior State University が毎年アンケートで選んでいる「困りもの英単語」大賞について書く。
今年の結果は、以前このブログでも取り上げたことがある vape や manspreading など、他の団体が "Word of the Year" として選定あるいは検討した新語もあっておもしろかった。
また、メディアやサイバー関係の言葉が複数選ばれているのも時代の反映だろうが、そんな表現のひとつといえるのが break the Internet である。
今回の発表にあった記述と投票者からのコメントを引用しよう。
- BREAK THE INTERNET
A phrase that is annoying online word-watchers around the world.
- An annoying bit of hyperbole about the latest saucy picture or controversy that is already becoming trite.
- Meaning a post or video or whatever will have so much Internet traffic that it will 'break the internet.'

とはいえ、これだけでは意味がつかみにくい。英和辞典のみならず英語圏のオンライン辞書にも見当たらなかったが、唯一、Urban Dictionary に下記のような記述があった。
- Causing a large commotion on the world wide web with many social networks and news outlets discussing the same thing.
Have you heard about that dress that everyone is saying looks either black and blue or gold and white? Of course. Everyone's talking about it. It broke the internet

break the news といえば「公表する、ニュースになる」、breaking news は「ニュース速報」だが、そんな感じの break ではないだろうか。日本語で「ブレイクする」と言うのも、これに連なるニュアンスだろうか。
また、特定の話題についてサイト・掲示板に大量の書き込みが殺到した際に「お祭り騒ぎ」「祭り」と言うことがあるが、内容・状況によってはこの日本語も訳語として使えるかもしれない。
そんなことを思いながらさらにネットを調べると、この表現が話題となった出来事が一昨年あったことを知った。PAPER という雑誌の表紙に、モデルのキム・カーダシアンがお尻をつきだしている写真が使われて大反響を巻き起こしたというものだが、そこに Break the Internet と書かれていたのだ。
今回の選定が書いていた上記の the latest saucy picture はこれを指しているのに違いあるまい。日本でも「インターネットを壊せ、というキャッチフレーズをつけた写真」として紹介されており、このへんに疎い私は知らなかったが、ご存知の方もいることだろう。
「インターネットを壊せ」とすると「ブレイク」とは意味が違ってくるが、この表現は英語ネイティブスピーカーにも新奇に響くものなのか、かの TIME 誌がこの表紙について What Does It Mean to ‘Break the Internet’? というタイトルの記事を載せていた。
下記のように書き始めているが、読んでいくと、インターネットに対抗するプリントメディアなどの動向を取りあげた内容であることがわかる。なお、PAPER 誌の表紙もここで見ることができるので、「タイム」も break the Internet に貢献しているといえそうだ。

お騒がせ雑誌とはいえ、プリントメディアが Break the Internet と謳った狙いは何だったのか、それを思うと「インターネットを破壊しろ」も、実はあながち間違いではないのかもしれない。「タイム」もこの表現を広い意味に取って書いたとも考えられる。どう解釈すべきか、わかる方は教えていただければ幸いである。
さて、以下おまけとして、おもしろいと思ったその他の選定をあげておこう。stakeholder は以前、国際情勢にからんで取りあげたことがある言葉だが（→stakeholder と「関係者」）、確かにやたらと目にするようになったなと感じていた。
- CONVERSATION
It has replaced ‘discussion,’ ‘debate,’ ‘chat,’ ‘discourse,’ ‘argument,’ ‘lecture,’ ‘talk’….all of which can provide some context to the nature of the communication.
- STAKEHOLDER
A word that has expanded from describing someone who may actually have a stake in a situation or problem, now being over-used in business to describe customers and others.
- PRESSER
This shortened form of “press release” and “press conference” is not so impressive.
上記を含め今回選んだ言葉を詰めあわせて、Lake Superior State University の担当者は次のような文を書いていた。詳しくはこの選定のサイトをご覧いただければと思う。
-“Overused words and phrases are ‘problematic’ for thousands of Queen's English ‘stakeholders,’” said an LSSU spokesperson while ‘vaping’ an e-cigarette during a ‘presser.’ “Once something is banished, there's no ‘walking it back;’ that's our ‘secret sauce,' and there’s no ‘price point’ for that.”
