go viral 「インターネットで流行る、拡散する」 [辞書に載っていない表現]
viral は、にわかに注目を集めているジカ熱などの virus の形容詞だが、先日 break the internet という表現を取り上げた際に紹介した TIME 誌の記事にも出ていて、ウイルスとは関係ない、サイバー用語としても使われるようになっていることを示す実例となっていた。
その「タイム」の記事 What Does It Mean to ‘Break the Internet’? から引用しよう。PAPER 誌が表紙に使ったキム・カーダシアン Kim Kardashian の破壊的なお尻写真について書いたものである。
- Paper is a better print venue for her to bare it all in a non-pornographic way. It’s prestigious in an artsy way, but not too prestigious to demure from the full-butt experience. Plus, print is always unexpected, and Kim loves the unexpect--remember her divorce from Kris Humphries? It’s reminiscent of Benedict Cumberbatch’s recent old-fashioned newspaper engagement announcement, which immediately went viral.

- Those events might change internet. But in the context of viral media content, “breaking the Internet” means engineering one story to dominate Facebook and Twitter at the expense of more newsworthy things. (Like, for example, the fact that humans have landed a probe on a comet for a first time in history.)

viral のこの意味は、私の使っている英和辞典はどれも記載していなかったので、英語圏の辞書から引用しよう。上記の例にもあるように go viral という言い方ができる。
- used to describe a piece of information, a video, an image, etc. that is sent rapidly over the Internet from one person to another

Within 24 hours, the video went viral on YouTube and Facebook.

辞書に載っていなくても、日本でも「バイラルマーケティング」「バイラルメディア」として広がってきているので、知っているという人も多いことだろう。
ウイルスのように人びとの間に広まり、流行り、人気が出る、という感じでイメージしやすいが、この単語がこのように使われるようになったのは、やはりコンピューターウイルスからの連想もあるのだろうか。
ついでだが virus と同じラテン語に由来するのが virulence, virulent 「有毒（の）」「毒性（のある）」である。ラテン語由来といえば vital や vigor は生命力、活力に溢れた方を指すのでベクトルは逆、しかし響きは viral や virulent と何となく似ているようにも感じられる。語源的に共通した要素があるのだろうか。
余談だが、私にとって virus は日本語の表記にからんだ思い出がいろいろある単語だ。現在では「ウイルス」と定まっているようだが、私が子どもの時は「ビールス」とも呼ばれたほか、微妙に違う「ウィルス」という表記もあり、大いにとまどった記憶がある。
そして英語を学び始めて発音を知った時は「あっ」と思った。幼い時に観た「ガメラ対宇宙怪獣バイラス」という映画を思い出したからだ。イカのような怪獣だったが、名前はウイルスから取ったものだったのか。
そう考えていたら、ある時、英語のタイトルでは Viras となっていることを知って、なあんだ、と思った。しかし、Virus では「ウイルス怪獣」のように受け取られるのでわざとスペリングを変えたのではないか。そんな想像もしたが、実際のところはどうだったのだろうか。
