jiggle like Jell-O 「ゼリー菓子のようにぷるぷる動く」 （重力波の初観測に成功） [ニュースと英語]
科学系の大ニュースは一般の人にはチンプンカンプンなことが多い。そこでマスメディアあるいは当の科学者自身が、腕をふるってわかりやすい説明につとめることがある。新聞の一面トップで報じられた「アインシュタインが予言した重力波の初観測」をめぐっては、そんな英文記事をいくつか読むことができて面白かった。
そのうち、AP通信の記事のひとつは速報が一段落してから推敲により時間をかけて書いたものだろうか、英語学習面でも参考になるような表現が使われていて親しみやすいし、研究者たちのコメントも"象牙の塔に籠もる浮世離れした学者”といったイメージとは対極的な生き生きしたものが使われている。
その記事にあった jiggle like Jell-O について取り上げてみよう。２つのブラックホールが13億年前に合体した時に重力波が生じ、それが地球に到達したのを観測したと説明する研究チームのリーダーの言葉に出てくる。
- In this case, the crashing of the two black holes stretched and squished Earth so that it was "jiggling like Jell-O," but in a tiny, almost imperceptible way, said David Reitze, LIGO's executive director.

まず、jiggle を引き立る比喩に使われている jell-O はアメリカのメーカーが作っているゼリー食品のことで、この商品を知らなくても文字から何となく想像がつきそうだ。インターネットで画像検索すれば実物の画がたくさん見つかる。
なお Reitze 氏の発言は、他メディアの記事では
- When it gets to the Earth the gravitational wave is going to stretch and compress space. The Earth is jiggling like jello.
と引用され、一般名詞の jello (=jelly) で表記されていた。口頭での発表なのでどちらかなのかは不明だが、意味的に違いが出るものではないだろう。
jiggle 「上下左右に細かく急速に動く（動かす）」「小刻みに揺れる（揺さぶる）」は以前取り上げたことがあるが（→「貧乏ゆすり」）、日本語は擬音語・擬態語が豊かとあって状況にあわせて生き生きとした訳語が工夫できそうな単語だ。ゼリーなら例えば「ぷるぷる」だろうが、英語圏の辞書にあった下記の例文では「ゆらゆら」「じゃらじゃら」「ぴくぴく」「がちゃがちゃ」といった感じだろうか。

joggle という類義語もあるわけである。また語源となった jig は16世紀頃にイギリスで流行った踊りということだが、ここから転じたのだろう、バロック音楽に「ジグ」あるいは「ジーグ」と呼ばれる早いテンポの舞曲があり、giga とか gigue と表記されている。
さて最初の方に書いたように、この記事には他にも参考になる表現や面白い言い回しが出てくる。長くなるので説明は省くが、目に留まったものをいくつか列挙しよう。
