「再び訪れる」ではない revisit [注意したい単語・意外な意味]
先日取り上げた大ニュース「重力波の初観測に成功」についての英文記事に revisit という単語が使われていた。「再訪する」という訳語しか載せていない辞書もあるが、今回の記事に当てはまる別の意味もある。注意すべきではと思ったので少し書いてみたい。
センセーションを巻き起こした今回のニュースは、私は知る由もなかったが、実は記者会見の数日前に「近く正式発表されるらしい」と噂されていたようだ。例えば Tech Insider というサイトにそうした内容の事前記事が載っていたのを後になって見つけた。revisit が出てくるのはこの記事である。
- Confirming they exist would tell us we're still on the right track to understanding how the universe works. Failing to find them after all these years might suggest we need to revisit our best explanation for gravity or rethink our most sensitive experiments, or that we simply haven't looked long enough.

re+visit だから、確かに「再び訪れる」「立ち戻る」ということに間違いはなく、冒頭に書いたように訳語としてこれだけを載せている辞書もある。
しかし英文をいろいろ読んでいると、さらに一歩進めた、より強い意味でも使われることがあるのに気づく。英語圏の辞書から、そちらの語義を中心に抜き書きしてみよう。

the council will have to revisit the issue at a general meeting this summer
Everyone knows how I feel and there's no point revisiting that situation at all.

- to re-examine (a topic or theme) after an interval, with a view to making a fresh appraisal

- formal to consider or discuss something again:
We need to revisit this proposal as soon as the budget is clearer.

つまり、場所ではないものについて revisit が使われていた場合は、「再び取り上げる」、それも、違った視点から「再考する」「考え直す」「見直す」という意味合いが強い、ということになる。上記の記事は、直後に rethink が並列のように出てくるので、当たりがつけやすいかもしれない。
今回のニュースでは、revisit が使われていた記事をもうひとつ見つけた。New Scientist という科学系サイトにあったもので、重力波を予言していたアインシュタインとの架空対談の形を取っている。質問はくだけた普通の人の口調、アインシュタインの答えは難しい単語も出てくる硬めの英語にした、サイド的な記事である。
- Q: I heard you actually found an error in your original 1916 paper on relativity that dealt with gravitational waves, and had to revisit the matter in 1918?
A: The important question of how gravitational fields propagate was treated by me in an academy paper one and a half years ago. However, I have to return to the subject matter since my former presentation is not sufficiently transparent and, furthermore, is marred by a regrettable error in calculation.
Q: We all make mistakes.

なお、この単語を「再訪」という訳語だけで考えると都合が悪そうだ、と私が思うようになったのは、"～ revisited" といったタイトルを時おり目にするのに気づいた時だったが、この言い方に言及した辞書もあった。
- to reconsider or reevaluate: often used postpositively in the pp., as in essay or book titles: “Mark Twain Revisited”
(Webster's New World College Dictionary)
いずれにせよやさしい単語でもあり、これまで「再考する」と言いたい時に reconsider などを使っていた人は、ちょっと思い直して revisit の使用も考えてみてはいかがだろうか。

楽しくブログを拝見させていただいております。
さて、取り上げられたrevisitを『英語語源辞典』（研究社）にて調べると、1500年に「再び訪れる」，1525年から1712年の間に「再検査する」の意味で使われましたので、tempus fugit様が挙げられていた意味の原型は、わりと昔にできたのかもしれませんね。私の守備範囲外ですが、おそらく、英語史にお詳しい方などは、見当がつく語かもしれません。

Kawadaさん、興味深い情報ありがとうございました。1525年から1712年とは幅が広いですが、いずれにせよかなり昔から使われていたのですね。「オックスフォード英語辞典」なら何らかの手がかりが載っているのではないかと思いましたが、どうでしょうか。

reconsider よりsophisticateされている感じがします。
native な英文はスマートな感じがするのはコンプレックスからでしょうか...（苦笑）
