fall for ～ hook, line and sinker 「（異性に）首ったけ」「（ウソに）すっかりだまされる」 [注意したい単語・意外な意味]
今回も、このところ表現を拾っている犯罪ノンフィクション People Who Eat Darkness （邦題「黒い迷宮: ルーシー・ブラックマン事件15年目の真実」）から引用する。hook, line and sinker という表現を取り上げたい。
先日書いた custodian のすぐ後に出てくる。日本で失踪したイギリス人女性 Lucie Blackman さんの母親 Jane が若い頃を回想した部分で、夫（つまりルーシーの父親）となる Tim とのなれそめについて語っている。女にモテたティムはジェーンに言い寄るが、女性として自分に自信がない彼女は、初めはつれない態度を取っていたという。
- I think I was the first person in his life who hadn't fallen for him just like that, so I was a challenge. But I had no confidence, if I'm honest. I had lots of very beautiful girlfriends who had men flocking round them, but at discos I was always the custodian of the handbags. hook, line and sinker は文字通りにはもちろん「釣り針、釣り糸、おもり」ということだが、これで「完全に」という意味になる。魚がエサ以外のものも丸呑みにしてしまう、というイメージで考えればよさそうだ。辞書を見たらその通りの説明があった。

swallow ~ hook, line and sinker は「なるほど」と思うが、そのほか、引用した実例や辞書の例文に見られるように fall for との組み合わせも多いようだ。しかし今回の実例や「レクシス」の例文は「異性に夢中になる」ということであり、上記「オックスフォード」にある deceive や trick の意味はそぐわない。
実は fall for という表現は、人に使うかモノに使うかによって意味が異なり、これを知っていると腑に落ちる。辞書で確かめてみよう。

They fell for each other instantly.
fall for something
(no passive) (informal) to be tricked into believing something that is not true

ということで、ちょっと注意が必要である。この点で、先の「オックスフォード」の hook,line and sinker の説明は不親切ではないかと思うが、意外なことにこれについてしっかり分けて説明している辞書はほとんどないようだ。例外はオンラインの The Free Dictionary にある「ケンブリッジイディオム辞典」くらいだった。
