all-singing, all-dancing 「いろいろな機能のついた」「万能選手の」

「歌って踊って」という感じの all-singing, all-dancing だが、イギリス英語で「多機能の」「多目的の」「何でもできる」という意味になる。これも、このところ表現を渉猟している犯罪ノンフィクション People Who Eat Darkness （邦題「黒い迷宮: ルーシー・ブラックマン事件15年目の真実」）に出てきたものだ。

東京で事件に巻き込まれたイギリス人女性 Lucie Blackman さんの知人が、彼女とその親友 Loiuse について語ったくだりである。

ここでは人に使われているが、辞書の語義や例文を見ると、たいていは機械やコンピューターなどを対象にするらしい。モノについて「歌って踊れる」と形容するのがおもしろい。

World Wide Words という英語についてのサイトによると、20世紀初期、コーラスガールが出てくるトーキー映画（当時の最新技術）について使われたことから広まったらしい（今はアメリカよりもイギリスでよく使われるというのがおもしろい）。まさに「歌って踊って」に由来する言葉だとも言えるようである。
