enabler 「結果的に悪い行いに手を貸してしまう人」 （トランプ、ヒラリーを攻撃） [アメリカ政治]
10年近く前に enabler について書いたので２度目のエントリになるが、アメリカ大統領選挙に立候補しているトランプ氏がヒラリー・クリントン氏についてこの単語を使ったという情報をコメントでいただいた。大統領選のニュースは最近フォローしていなかったので、調べてみた。
今月初めにオレゴン州やワシントン州で行った遊説で述べたものだが、「お騒がせトランプがヒラリー相手に女性問題カードを切った」という扱いになるとあって、ネットを検索すると、なるほど話題となっていた。
ヒラリーの夫ビル・クリントン元大統領は不倫を重ねてスキャンダルを巻き起こした（参考→ クリントンの「不適切な関係」)。普通だったら離婚は必至とも思えるがそうはならず、お互いに政治的な打算・計算から夫婦を続けているという見方もある。
「enable する人」とは、「他人が悪いことをしていると知りながら、甘い態度を取ったりしてそれを助長してしまう人」を意味する。10年前には「辞書に載っていない単語」として扱ったが、今は記載している辞書も増えているようだ。
トランプ氏の発言を報じる記事から引用しよう。

さらにネットを見ていて知ったのだが、トランプ氏はすでに今年１月、Fox TV のインタビュー番組でヒラリー氏について enabler を使って次のような発言を行っていた。
- She’s not a victim. She was an enabler. Yes, she worked with him. Some of the women have been totally destroyed. Some of these women have been destroyed, and Hillary worked with him.
トランプ氏の最新の発言をめぐっては、正面切っての批判、また女性関係が派手だった彼自身はどうなんだといった声をネットで読むことができる一方で、元大統領の不倫相手たちが「ヒラリーは enabler だ」と言っていることを紹介した記事もあった。やはり下世話な興味には勝てないので、Breitbart というサイトにあった後者を引用しよう。
- (Gennifer) Flowers in October told me she believes Hillary is “an enabler that has encouraged him (Bill) to go out and do whatever he does with women.” （中略）
Juanita Broaddrick last November stated...that she blames Hillary Clinton for covering up her husband’s alleged sexual crimes and indiscretions. “I think she has always known everything about him. （中略）
In an interview that aired on my radio show this past January, (Paula) Jones demanded Hillary Clinton personally apologize for “allowing” her husband to “abuse” and “sexually harass” women.

enabler は、悪行と知りつつそれを許すような結果につながる場合に使うと考えていたが、今回の実例は、見て見ぬふりをするどころか、むしろ積極的に深みにはまるのを夫に奨励したとヒラリーを非難しているようにも聞こえる。そうしたニュアンスでも使えるのかもしれない。
英語圏の辞書にある定義をひとつ引用しておこう。
- psychology someone who allows or makes it possible for another person to behave in a way that damages that person:
He accepts his responsibility as the enabler of many of his wife's problems.
