discipline 「（オリンピックなどの）競技、種別」 [辞書に載っていない表現]
暑い日が続いて頭が働かず、リオ五輪の熱い闘いをテレビで観る毎日を送っている。しかし怠惰なままでは英語力も退化してしまうので、オリンピックを題材にちょっと勉強してみよう。取り上げるのは discipline だが、おなじみの「規律」「しつけ」「罰」とはまた違った意味があるのがおもしろい。
ためしに「エコノミスト」誌で五輪関連の最新の記事を読んでみると、次のような英文がある。内容もわかるように紹介するとあまりに長くなるので、この単語が出てくるところに絞って引用しよう。
- Results in disciplines like men’s javelin and weightlifting, where records were reset around 1990 following a string of doping scandals, have plateaued close to pre-reset levels.

- Rio is not the ideal place to buck this trend. For a start, it lies at sea level. This is a boon to beach volleyball players, who get to compete in their discipline’s spiritual home on Copacabana. ２つ目の文章にはビーチバレーが出てくるので Wikipedia でこの競技の項を見ると、
- Beach volleyball is a team sport played by two teams of two players on a sand court divided by a net. It has been an Olympic discipline since the 1996 Games.

と、ここでも discipline が使われている。
こうした実例に見ていると、どうやらスポーツの競技のことを指すらしいとあたりがつく。
しかし、英和辞典のみならず英語圏の辞書を見ても、それらしい記述は載っていない。わずかに見つかったのがウェブ辞書の Wiktionary で、列挙された語義の一番最後に
- A category in which a certain art, sport or other activity belongs.
とあった。
さらに、この単語を sports といった関連語とともに検索してみると、例えば次のような実例がヒットする。前者はヨガについての記事、後者は国際オリンピック委員会についての記述である。
- Very soon, athletes might start competing for a medal in yoga at multi-discipline events. The sports ministry on Monday recognized yoga as a sports discipline and placed it in the ‘priority’ category alongside disciplines like football, swimming, squash and chess, among others.

後者の記述から、オリンピックでは sport, discipline, event という順にカテゴリーが小さくなることもわかる。
またJOCのサイトを見ると「オリンピック憲章」の日英対訳があり、それぞれ「競技」「種別」「種目」という日本語が当てられていた。そして憲章は discipline について、
- A discipline, being a branch of an Olympic sport comprising one or several events, must have a recognised international standing to be included in the programme of the Olympic Games.

のように定めていることがわかった。
ウェブでは多数の実例があるのに、手元で参照できる辞書を見た限りでは、どれも「種別」の意味を載せていないのがちょっと不思議である。
なお discipline は「学科、学問の分野」のことでもあり、あわせて押さえておきたい。スポーツで使う意味と共通するものがありそうだ。

discipline とは関係ないがついでに書くと、最初から２つ目に引用した「エコノミスト」の記事で boon 「恩恵、ありがたいこと」と bane 「災い、悩みの種」が対の形で使われているのもおもしろい。類例を調べてみたい表現だ。
