boon or bane 「ありがたいもの・やっかいなもの」 [単語・表現]
オリンピックの「種別」を意味する discipline を先日取り上げた際、紹介した実例の中で boon 「恩恵」と bane 「悩みの種、命取り」が対にして使われていたのがおもしろいと書いた。この２つの単語を一緒に使っている例が他にもないか調べたら、予想通り見つかった。
まずは、リオ五輪について書いた先日の「エコノミスト」誌の記事をもう一度引用しよう。
- Rio is not the ideal place to buck this trend. For a start, it lies at sea level. This is a boon to beach volleyball players, who get to compete in their discipline’s spiritual home on Copacabana. But it is a bane for many track-and-field athletes, because it means air in Rio is denser than at higher altitudes, and drag greater.

この組み合わせが辞書に載っていないかと手元の電子辞書を見たところ、成句としての扱いはなかったが、例文検索をしたら、
- African women questioned whether microcredit was a boon or bane.
(Oxford Sentence Dictionary)
という文があった。
そこで改めてネットを検索してみると、確かにヒットがある。文字数が少ない単語のうえ人目を引くからか、見出しに使われた例が多いという感じがする。例えば、
- Brexit: Boon or Bane
- The Internet of Things: Boon or Bane of Society?
- Social Networking for Businesses: Is it a Boon or Bane?
- The Boon and Bane of Radiocarbon Dating
見出し以外の例もあった。
- The current hot summer aggravated by the El Nino phenomenon is a boon, not a bane, for the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Pangasinan.

なお後者にある publish or perish は boon or bane と同じように韻を踏んでいる表現だが、アメリカにおけるアカデミズムの厳しさについて使われる決まり文句で、「研究成果を発表しない者は去れ」「論文を出版しなければ学者生命は終わり」という意味。またタイトルにある where X ends and Y starts という表現は以前取り上げたことがある（→ 「どこまでを～どこからが～」を英語でどういうか）。
ということで、この boon と bane、機会があったら実際に使ってみてはいかがだろうか。
