ドナルド・トランプと pivot 「方針転換」「変節」 [アメリカ政治]
pivot は「軸」「回転する」を意味する単語だが、アメリカ大統領選挙のドナルド・トランプ候補にからんで最近よく使われているようだ。このところネットで見たトランプ氏関連の記事の大半で目にしたとの感もあるので、取り上げてみたい。
そのひとつ、次のCNNの記事には、トランプ自身の発言を含め pivot が立て続けに出てくる。
- Trump has repeatedly hinted at striking a more inclusive and presidential tone, but has also said time and again that he does not want to "change" or "pivot."
"I am who I am. It's me. I don't want to change. Everyone talks about, 'Oh are you going to pivot?' I don't want to pivot. You have to be you. If you start pivoting you are not being honest with people," Trump told local Wisconsin station WKDT this week.

トランプ氏といえば毒舌が“売り”で、関連の英語表現を取り上げたこともあるが（→ trash talk, talk trash 「毒舌（を吐く）」「こきおろす」）、このところマイナス面が目立ってきたうえ、本選挙で勝つためにはより幅広い層から支持を取り付ける必要があるということであろう、現実的な路線に軌道修正するよう求める声が高まっている。
そこでトランプ氏が新しい言動を取ると、それが pivot といえるかどうかをめぐって、さまざまな見方が飛び交うようになっている。
上記の記事にある change でも意味はほぼ同じだろうが、それだと新味がないし（かつてオバマ大統領が選挙運動で使っていた言葉でもある）、差別化を図るためにも pivot とした方が耳目を引きつけるのだろう。
ということで、最近の記事のタイトルに絞っただけでも、実に多く使われている。少し紹介すると、

The Dailywire というサイトにあった記事によると、この言葉は少なくとも数か月前からトランプ氏について使われているらしい。こちらも長めではあるがまとまった部分を引用しよう。
- There has been talk of Donald Trump “pivoting” for months. Trump surrogate Ben Carson said in March, “You’re going to see Trump pivoting." In July, Reince Priebus used the word four times in an interview on ABC: “I think as he pivots to the general election, picking Mike Pence, I think he’s much more precise in his rhetoric, in his tone, in his attack,” “He knows the pivot is important. He has been better and I think he’s going to be great moving forward,” “He’s getting there and he’s going to pivot there,” and “Donald Trump on the stage delivering a great speech is going to go a long way for Donald Trump in pivoting to the general.”
