wobble 「ふらつく」「よろめく」 （太陽系に最も近い地球型惑星を発見） [ニュースと英語]
太陽系に最も近い恒星プロキシマ・ケンタウリに、地球型の惑星があることが確認された。文系の私だが、宇宙関係の話題は興味があるのでこれまで何度か取り上げており、今回もこのニュースの記事から wobble という単語を学ぶことにしよう。科学ネタなら難しい言葉かと思われるかもしれないが、後述するように日常生活でも便利に使えそうなのだ。
ケンタウルス座アルファ星 Alpha Centauri のすぐ近くにある Proxima Centauri は、私のようなＳＦファンにはおなじみだ（ラテン語由来の Proxima は proximity 「近いこと」や approximate 「近接した」「おおよその」などとつながりがある。なお発音記号をみると Centauri は英語では「セントーライ」のように発音される）。この星を回る惑星が発見され、Proxima b と名づけられた。これまで見つかった太陽系外の惑星（参考→ exoplanet 「太陽系外惑星」）としては、地球に一番近いことになる。
今回の発見を伝える記事には、以前取り上げた goldilocks という単語が使われているだろうと思い、復習も兼ねてウェブを検索してみた（参考→ goldilocks 「生命が存在可能な」「景気がちょうどよい状態の」）。確かにその通りだったが、もうひとつ、どの記事でも目に留まったのが wobble である。私にとってあやふやな単語なので、実例を取り上げることによって定着を図りたいと考えた。
この単語がいくつもの記事で使われていた理由だが、惑星が恒星の周りを回る際、恒星が重力で引っ張られて「ふらつき」を見せるという。そこで、恒星の「ふらつき」を検出し分析することで、惑星の存在を調べることができることになる（といっても私もあやふやな理解しかできていないが）。
前置きはここまでにして、記事をひとつ紹介しよう。長いが、動詞および名詞の wobble が随所に出てくる。

ちょっと難しい内容になってしまったが、下記に転記する辞書の説明や例文を見ると、実は日常生活でも使えそうな単語であることがわかる。

今回発見されたのは、あくまで生命が存在可能な条件を備えた habitable (goldilock) zone にある地球型惑星、というだけで詳しいことは何もわかっておらず、日本の一部メディアに見られた「地球そっくりの星」という表現は misleading だろう。また「わずか４．２光年」とも書かれていたが、いくら地球に最も近い星とはいえ、今の人類の技術力では到達するのに何万年もかかる距離である。
それでも、「近いところに似た存在がある」というだけで、何となくうれしい感じがするのは、孤独を嫌う人間の本能に根ざしたものであろうか。
