papier-mache Trump head 「トランプの張りぼて人形」 （反トランプのデモ広がる） [ラテン語・外来語]
大統領選挙のあと、アメリカ各地でトランプ当選に反対するデモが起きている。こうした抗議行動によく登場するのが、非難する相手をかたどった人形で、それを燃やしたりして気勢を上げる。英文記事では papier-mâché とか effigy という単語で表現されることが多い。後者は以前取り上げたことがあるので、前者について書いてみよう。
張り子をつくるのに使われる、紙粘土に似た素材を指し、見ての通りフランス語に由来する。２つの文字にアクサン記号がつくが、英語ではそれがない表記も目にする。「パピエイ・マシェイ」のように発音するのが正統だが、外国語に弱いアメリカ人が多いことを反映してか、アメリカ英語として paper と同じ発音記号も辞書に載っている。
ウェブで見つけた次の実例には、papier-mâché と effigy, さらに類語でスペイン語由来の piñata がまとめて出てくる。

effigy は、冒頭に書いたようにずいぶん前に取り上げたことがある（→ hang in effigy という慣習）。また piñata は、
- ピニャータ（菓子・果物・贈り物などを詰めて飾り立てた陶器のつぼまたは紙張り子；メキシコでクリスマスや誕生日などに天井からぶら下げ、目隠しをした子供が割って楽しむ）

と辞書に書かれている。こちらも、本来は波線記号がつく n （エニェ）を使わない pinata としている表記もある。

papier-mâché は辞書を見ると、「まやかしの、見せかけの、見かけ倒しの、こけおどしの」といった意味も乗っていた。まさに「張り子の虎」 paper tiger である。こちらはウェブで実例がすぐに見つからなかったので、辞書の用例を引用しよう。

トランプ氏は選挙人の獲得数で勝利したが、得票数 popular vote では現時点でクリントン氏の方がわずかだが上回っているという。こうした”ねじれ”現象が起こりうるアメリカ大統領選挙の制度は本当に不思議だが、今回これが確定すれば、2000年のブッシュ―ゴアの選挙以来のことになる。ヒラリー支持者の怒りもなかなか収まらないだろう。
