wonk 「仕事の虫」「まじめ人間」「オタク」 （続・大統領になれなかったヒラリー） [アメリカ政治]
ヒラリー・クリントンについての英文記事を読んでいると、時おり wonk という単語を見ることがある。ドナルド・トランプにはあてはまりそうになく、彼が大統領に就任してもまずお目にかかれないだろうから、これが最後の機会と取り上げてみたい。
たとえば、次のような実例がウェブで見つかる。

英和辞典を見ると、「仕事の虫」「ガリ勉」「まじめ人間」「退屈なやつ」「つまらない人」「専門バカ」「おたく」といった訳語が並んでいる。
形容詞として下記のように wonky と wonkish があった。実例からもわかるようにヒラリーは wonk を自認しているそうだ。彼女についてこの単語がよく使われるのも無理はない。
- "Now, I confess, I confess, it’s true I can be a little wonky," Clinton said in a June 27 speech. "But I have this old-fashioned idea: If you’re running for president, you should say what you want to do and how you will get it done."

後者の記事は、「トランプに投票すべき５つの理由」というタイトルにだまされてはいけない。原文を読めばわかるようにこれは反語で、彼に投票する愚かしさを逆説的に説いたものだ。しかし皮肉にも、結果は筆者の意図とは逆になってしまった。

こうした記述にあるように政治との親和性が高いようで、この他の英語圏の辞書にある実例も policy wonk がやたらと目につく。手持ちの英和辞典からは得られなかった情報だ。

語源不明とするもの、know を逆に綴ったという説明、先に形容詞の wonky があってそれから出来たという説、さらに擬声語・擬態語、というように定まっていない。「ガリ勉の」「退屈な」のほか、上記の英語の説明のように「ぐらぐらする」「不安定な」という意味がある wonky だが、その由来についても引用するとキリがないので、興味のある方は辞書をで確かめていただきたい。
言葉についてのサイト World Wide Words は、上記の説を含めたうえさらにいろいろ記述していた。そのひとつは WithOut Normal Knowledge の各語の頭文字を取ったというものでこれまたおもしろいが、いずれにせよ、歴史の浅い単語であるにもかかわらず、「これが正しい由来」という決定打はないらしい。
もうひとつ、上記 Wiktionary の記述で目をひくのがクリントン政権に言及があることだ。Online Etymology Dictionary にも、
- It seemed to rise into currency as a synonym for nerd late 1980s from Ivy League slang and was widely popularized 1993 during the presidency of Bill Clinton. Tom Wolfe (1988) described it as "an Eastern prep-school term referring to all those who do not have the 'honk' voice, i.e., all who are non-aristocratic."
とあった。この記述からはクリントン夫妻と直接の結びつきがあるのかは不明だが、少なくともヒラリーは wonk と少なからぬ縁があるということはいえそうだ。このへんのことをさかのぼって調べればさらにおもしろいことがわかるだろうが、手に余るのでこれくらいにしたい。詳しい方がいらしたら教えていただければ幸いである。
そんな仕事人間ヒラリーの敗因は先日も書いたようにいろいろあげられているが（→ A first name will suffice. 「ファーストネームだけでOK」 （大統領になれなかったヒラリー））、一般投票 popular vote ではトランプよりも多くの票を取ったのは間違いないようだ（その意味では僅差でクリントン優位という事前の世論調査も完全に間違っていたとはいえないことになる）。それでも州の選挙人の獲得数 electoral vote で負けとなるのは、本当に不思議な制度である。
