out of whack 「調子が悪い」 [単語・表現]
前回、「もぐらたたき」を英語で何というかについて書いた際に出てきた単語 whack にからんで、イディオムをひとつメモしておきたい。out of whack は人やモノが「不調である」ことを指す。out of order と同じようなものと考えればよさそうだ。
いくつかの辞書から語義と用例を引用しよう。イギリスでは使われない表現らしい。
- （人・物・事が）具合が悪い、機能しない；（…と）一致（調和）しない（with）
go out of whack 具合が悪くなる

throw...out of whack という用例のように、be動詞以外の動詞も使えることがわかる。
今回の whack は、先日の「もぐらたたき」の表現にあった「強打」の意味とはそれこそ調和しない。そこでさらに辞書を調べると、この単語にはいろいろな意味があり、そのひとつとして、
-（口語）（よい）具合（condition, order）

-（米俗）状態、具合；よい状態
My stomach's out of whack. 胃の具合が悪い
I'm in fine whack. とても具合がいい
(ランダムハウス英和大辞典)
という語義があった。
なるほど、in fine whack という言い方もあるのか。しかしオンライン辞書を見てもこの形での項目や用例は他に記載が見当たらない。さらにウェブで検索すると、ヒットはあったものの数は非常に少なく、よく使われている表現とは言い難いようだ。
言葉についてのサイト World Wide Words には whack の意味の変遷を書いた興味深い記事があり、その中に次のような記述があった。
- There seems to have been a phrase in fine whack during that century （注・19世紀）, meaning that something was in good condition or excellent fettle.（中略） It doesn’t often turn up in writing, though, so there’s some doubt how widespread it was.
To be out of whack would then have meant the opposite — that something wasn’t on top form or working well.

また、The Word Detective というサイトにも、
- ...and, in the 19th century, “in fine whack” and similar phrases appeared meaning “in good order” or, of a person, “in good shape.”
By 1885, the opposite sense had predictably appeared, and a person (or body part) in bad shape was described as “out of whack.”

つまり、まず in fine whack という言い方ができ、そこから反対の意味で out of whack という言い方をするようになったらしい。前者は後者を生み出したものの、逆に自身はあまり使われなくなってしまったわけで、言葉も生きていることを実感させる例といえるだろうか。
