「2016年の英単語」は dumpster fire 「手のつけられない大混乱、炎上状態」 [Word of the Year]
「今年の英単語」の本家 American Dialect Society が年明けに行う選定は私の楽しみで、10年前にこのブログを始めた時から欠かさず取り上げてきた。激動の2016年の象徴として発表された言葉はしかし、見ただけではピンとこないもので、自分の英語力や情報収集能力の限界を見せつけられた。
選ばれたのは、dumpster fire という言葉だった。2語だが、「アメリカ英語学会」は例年通り the Word of the Year と単数の表記で発表している。
dumpster は大型のゴミ容器のことだが、それが燃えているとはどういうことだろうか。発表された広報文にはこう書かれていた。
- Defined as “an exceedingly disastrous or chaotic situation,” the term dumpster fire was selected as best representing the public discourse and preoccupations of the past year.

つまり、手に負えないような混乱状態を、集積箱に入ったゴミが燃えさかっているさまにたとえたということのようだ。
さらに広報文を読むと、想像通りアメリカ大統領選挙に関係があるものだったが、ピンとこなかったとは、この言葉を含む英文を私は読んだことがなかったか、気も留めずに読み飛ばしていたことになる。前者であればいいのだが、残念ながらやはり後者と考えるべきだろう。
- As a metaphor for a situation that is out of control or poorly handled, dumpster fire came into prominence in 2016, very frequently in the context of the U.S. presidential campaign.

広報文によると、dumpster fire はもともとスポーツの放送で使われるようになった言葉であるという。オンライン辞書の Urban Dictionary にはこれに沿った定義が載っていたので、こちらも引用しておこう。
- In entertainment or sports, a laughably poor performance usually caused by:
1. Lack of planning, preparation or talent.
2. Random events that effectively sabotage the effort (i.e., technical problems).
The Word Spy というサイトは、「今年の単語」の意味で使われた実例をいくつかあげていて、最も早いものは2003年となっている。そこでは dumpster fire を次のように定義していた。
- A person, organization, or situation that is hopelessly and disastrously out of control.

こうした状況が極まったのが2016年だったということになる。アメリカ英語学会が具体的に言及したのは先に引用したようにアメリカの選挙戦だけだが、Business Insider というウェブサイトにあった "It's official — the 2016 Word of the Year is 'dumpster fire'" という記事は、Brexit や相次ぐテロ事件、有名人の死去をあげて次のように書いていた。
- Loosely defined as a poorly-handled or out-of-control situation, "dumpster fire" could apply to any number of consequential events that took place in 2016 — from a bitterly contested election that upended US politics as we know it, and a cataclysmic Brexit vote that sent shockwaves through Europe, to a series of tragic shootings and terrorist attacks and a seemingly endless list of high-profile celebrity deaths.

dumpster fire は、いまや英語になった”絵文字”でも盛んにツイートされたそうだ。「アメリカ英語学会」の発表文では、
- On Twitter, the “trashcan” and “fire” emoji were combined to provide a visual representation:
と書いたうえで、ゴミ箱と火の emoji を並べている。
さて、アメリカ英語学会の Word of the Year 選定は、いくつかの部門が設けられており、投票で最終的に「大賞」に選ばれた言葉のほかにも興味深い単語が見つかることがある。今回でいえば、このブログでも取り上げたことがある alt-right や lock-room banter, fake news は、どれも選挙戦を中心としたアメリカの混迷ぶりを表している言葉だ。
そして今回、大賞は逃したものの、部門のひとつ Political Word of the Year の1位になったのが post-truth だった。

fire にひっかけてタイトルで「炎上」としてみましたが、あまり適切ではなかったかもしれないな、と思っています。
