color 「影響を与える」 （トランプの当選後初会見より）

前回はトランプ次期大統領の当選後初めての会見から beauty の隠れた意味について長々と書いたので、 今回は短く済ませることにしたい。同じ会見から、動詞の color を取り上げよう。

質疑応答で記者から出された質問に出てくる。アメリカ大統領選挙でのロシアのハッキング疑惑について尋ねる内容だ。

- First of all, did the heads of the intelligence agencies provide you with a two-page summary of these unsubstantiated allegations? And secondly to that, on the broader picture, do you accept their opinion that Vladimir Putin ordered the hack of the DNC and the attempted hack of the RNC?

And if you do, how will that color your attempts to build a relationship with a leader who has been accused of committing an act of espionage against the United States?

これに答えて、トランプは初めてロシアの関与を認める発言をした。

動詞の color は「色をつける、染める、彩る」といった意味だが、ここでは「影響を与える」というような意味らしいと何となく想像できるかと思う。

- colour somebody's judgement/opinions/attitudes etc
to influence the way someone thinks about something, especially so that they become less fair or reasonable.
In my opinion, I can't afford to let my judgement be coloured by personal feelings.

以上はいずれもイギリスの辞書なので、colour また judgement は英式綴りとなっている。

英和辞典には単に「～に影響を及ぼす」としか書かれていないが、英語圏の辞書の定義からは、プラスではなくマイナスの方の影響を念頭に置いた単語であることがうかがえる。それを踏まえると、上記の質問もある種のニュアンスを含んでトランプにぶつけたと考えてもいいのかもしれない。
