pants on fire の新語義 「まったくのデタラメ」はトランプ就任で広まるか? [英語文化のトリビア]
前回取り上げた "alternative facts" にまつわる騒ぎに見られるように、トランプ登場にあわせて「事実」の価値が揺らいでいるようだ。ファクトチェック団体 PolitiFact は政治家の発言の真偽を確認してランクづけしているが、最悪レベルを pants on fire と表現していて、新政権で使用が広まるのではと感じる。
トランプ就任式の人出が過去最多だったかどうかをめぐる今回の騒ぎでも、CNNの記事の中で
- Spicer astoundingly stated, "This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period." Well, as the nonpartisan website Politifact concluded, Spicer's statement was a "pants on fire" lie.

Trump's team has had problems with telling the truth. As Politifact noted, Trump made almost 200 statements during the campaign that were deemed "Pants on fire" lies or simply false.

と使われていた。
辞書を見ると、この pants on fire は本来、
- 尻に火がついて、慌てふためいて
Liar! Liar! Pants on fire. （うそ、うそ、カワウソ）は、押韻のはやし言葉
(ランダムハウス英和大辞典)
ということなので、この「はやし言葉」にひっかけて PolitiFact が考案したのだろうと想像できる。
PolitiFact.com についての Wikipedia の記述を読むと、それで間違いないらしい。英米人にはピンとくるのかもしれないが、英語文化で育ったのではない非ネイティブスピーカーはお手上げだ。

PolitiFact のサイトを見ると、事実関係をチェックしたうえで True, Mostly True, Half True, Mostly False, False そして Pants on Fire の６段階で評価をつけている。トランプ発言のうち、最低ランクを集めた下記の専用ページもある。

ということで、「とんでもないデタラメ」の意味を持たせたのは PolitiFact と思われるが、オンライン辞書の Urban Dictionary には、このファクトチェック団体にまったく言及せずに、
- to lie so badly that, theoretically your pants will burst into flames. popularized by the kindergarten chant, "liar liar pants on fire!".
と書かれていたので、この意味が徐々に広まっているのかもしれない。
そしてトランプ政権が”ズボンに火がつく”ことを何とも思わずにトンデモ発言を続ければ、一般の辞書に新しい語義として収められる日が来ても不思議ではなさそうだ。
なお以前、pants に関わる表現を調べて下記のエントリにまとめて書いたことがあるので、参考までに付記しておきたい。この時は pants on fire という表現があることには気がつかなかった。
