vintage Trump 「"トランプ節"全開」 「これぞトランプ」 [注意したい単語・意外な意味]
ワインやファッション、趣味性の高い製品に使われる「ビンテージ」だが、vintage は”年代もの”でなくても、また人についても使うことができる。先週行われたトランプ大統領の記者会見について読んでいたら、奇しくも複数の記事がこの単語を使っていたので、取り上げてみよう。
まずはCNNの記事から。
- "The leaks are real. The leaks are absolutely real. The news is fake because so much of the news is fake," Trump said.
While it was a marked contrast with the normal dynamics of a presidential news conference, the East Room show was vintage Trump. He touted his own poll numbers, victory over Hillary Clinton and discussed cable TV ratings and panel discussions.

この vintage Trump を見てパッと頭に浮かんだ日本語が「トランプ節全開」「トランプ節炸裂」である。「ビンテージ」の語感やイメージとは真逆だが、私は昭和生まれなのでつい和風になってしまう。ほかに「トランプ本領発揮」あるいは「トランプ絶好調」なんてのはどうだろう。
別の記事でも目に留まった。
- The leaks are real. But the news about them is fake. The White House is a fine-tuned machine. Russia is a ruse.
For its stunning moments and memorable one-liners, Donald Trump's first solo news conference as president has no rivals in recent memory. （中略）
The performance was vintage Trump, a throwback to the messy, zinger-filled news conferences he held during the early stages of his campaign.

こちらは、「いかにもトランプらしいパフォーマンス」「まさにトランプ劇場そのものだった」などと訳せるかもしれない。また、a throwback ～ として「選挙戦の時のノリに戻ったような」とも書いているので、こちらの vintage は「過去」を指すニュアンスも念頭にあるのだろうか（”年代もの”というほど昔の話ではないが）。
英語圏の辞書を見てみると、今回の意味について次のような定義や例文が見つかった。
- showing the best or most typical qualities of someone

She turned in a vintage display of tennis to win the title.

なお、発音は日本語の表記につられないことが大切である。「ビンテージ」あるいは「ヴィンテージ」として定着しているが、第２音節にある -a- は /i/ なので、カタカナであえて発音を表すなら「ヴィンティジ」のようになるだろう。二重母音 /ei/ でもないので「ヴィン”テイ”ジ」のようにもならない。
ついでに連想したのが entertainer である。「エンターテイナー」のほか「エンターティナー」という表記を見かけることがあるが、第３音節は /ei/ であり、辞書を見る限り /i/ という変種はない。そこで英語では「エンター”ティ”ナー」のような発音は避けなくてはいけないことになる。
