existential threat 「死活問題の」「存亡にかかわる」 [注意したい単語・意外な意味]
少し前から読み進めているノンフィクションに existential threat という言葉が何度か出て来た。国際情勢に関する内容で、existential を辞書にあるような「実存（主義）の」という訳語で考えるとピンと来ない。
ブッシュ、オバマ両政権で国防長官を務めたロバート・ゲーツ氏の回想録に出てきたものだ。以下、それぞれシリアとイランの核開発疑惑をめぐる記述で、Olmert とは当時イスラエルの首相だったエフード・オルメルト氏のことである。
- Olmert responded that the reactor represented an existential threat to Israel that it could not trust diplomacy to fix, even if the effort was led by the United States.

- Olmert left no doubt that Israel say a nulcear-armed Iran as an exitential threat--as was Syria's reactor--and would not allow the program to succeed.

どうみても哲学の existentialism 「実存主義」とつなげるのは無理がありそうだ。「存在の、存在に関する」 といった語義はまだあてはまりそうだが、今ひとつイメージがわかない。
existential にこうした難しげな定義をつけているのは、英和辞典に限らず英語圏の辞書も同様だったが、その中で例外的だったのが「マクミラン」だ。

今回のノンフィクションにあった existential threat のほか、existential danger や existential crisis という言葉があげられている。ということで、「死活にかかわる」というような意味に取ればいいのではないだろうか、とあたりがつく。
「メリアム・ウェブスター」のオンライン辞書には簡単な定義しかなかったが、そのウェブサイトの質問コーナーに、まさにこの単語についての質問があり、詳しい説明がなされていた。

それはともかく、ネット記事で見つけた最近の実例をひとつ。昨今の北朝鮮情勢について使われたもので、「北の体制変更（キム・ジョンウン体制を崩壊させる）」ことにからめた内容である。
