frogmarch 「後ろ手に縛って引っ立てる」 （カズオ・イシグロ 「日の名残り」） [読書と英語]
ノーベル賞授賞をきっかけに再読した日系イギリス人作家カズオ・イシグロの代表作 The Remains of the Day （邦題「日の名残り」）から今回も単語を拾ってみたい。frogmarch という言葉が出てきたが、人間について使われていて、「カエルの行進」ではありえない。
主人公である執事が、同業者から聞いた話を綴っている場面である。
- And I recall also some years ago, Mr Rayne, who travelled to America as valet to Sir Reginald Mauvis, remarking that a taxi driver in New York regularly addressed his fare in a manner which if repeated in London would end up in some sort of fracas, if not in the fellow being frogmarched to the nearest police station.

この同業者 Mr Rayne は、ニューヨークに行った際、タクシー運転手の態度があまりに悪いので驚いた。ロンドンで同じことをしたら、frakas 「けんか騒ぎ」（語尾の -s は無音）になるだろう、警察沙汰にはならないにしても、というのである。
この frogmarch は「後ろ手に縛り上げて連れていく」「腕をつかんで無理やり歩かせる」「（酔っぱらいや手におえない犯人を）うつ伏せにして4人がかりで手足を持って運ぶ」といった訳語が英和辞典に並んでいる。イギリス英語の表現だという。
英語圏の辞書から説明を抜き書きしてみよう。
- to force someone who is unwilling tomove forward by holding the person'sarms behind their back and then pushingthem forward:

上にある splay out は「（足などを）広げる」ということだが、かえるになぞらえるとはおもしろい言葉である。
なお、ある英和辞典は「かえる運びにして連れていく」という訳語を載せていたが、「かえる運び」という言葉は日本語にあるのだろうか、個人的にはちょっと疑問である。
ついでに、引用した部分にある if not... は、むかし学校で習った形に従って「警察沙汰にはならないにしても」と書いてみたが、この表現は日本語として何となく座りが悪いように感じる。
そこで辞書を見たら、「～とまではいかないが」と並んで、「ひょっとしたら～だ」とか「～と言ってよいほどだ」、また used to suggest that something may be even larger, more important, etc. than was first stated という記述を載せているものがあった。こちらの方が適切かもしれない。「下手したら警察に連れて行かれる羽目になるかもしれない」といった感じである。
