a fly on the wall 「誰にも気づかれずにこっそり見聞きしている」

先日取り上げた fly 「計画がうまくいく」に続いて、同じ単語が使われた a fly on the wall という表現を紹介したい。「壁のハエ」とは何のことかと思うが、「他人に気づかれない形で観察している・聞き耳を立てている人」という意味である。

次の実例は、先日同様、映画「ブレードランナー」メイキング本の最新改訂版で見つけたものだ。

- "I do vaguely remember you being around and talking into a tape recorder all the time."

The Phrase Finder というサイトには、1920年代にアメリカで生まれた言い回しだという記述がある。由来についての具体的な説明は書かれていないが、壁にじっととまっているハエには誰も気がつかない、ということだろうか。

またこのサイトには、

- It is now most often used in relation to 'fly on the wall documentaries', which are films of real life situations supposedly made without affecting the behaviour of the participants.

と書かれていて、映像ドキュメンタリーの手法について使われることがわかる。辞書にはハイフン付きの fly-on-the-wall の形で見出し語となっていた。

ここから連想したのがいわゆる”リアリティTV”番組だが、検索するとやはり両方の言葉が使われている英文が見つかった。たとえば Wikipedia の "Reality television" の項には、

- In many reality television programs, camera shooting and footage editing give the viewer the impression that they are passive observers following people going about their daily personal and professional activities; this style of filming is sometimes referred to as fly on the wall or factual television.

さらに、

ということで、fly on the wall はリアリティTVの制作会社の社名にもなっていることになる。

リアリティTVといえば、私が子どもの時に「どっきりカメラ」という番組があり、楽しみに見ていた。いたずら（英語でいう practical joke）をタレントなどに仕掛けて驚く様子を隠しカメラで撮るというものだったが、実は "Candid Camera" というアメリカの往年の番組のパクリらしいことを社会人になってから知った。

ためしに使っている電子辞書を引いたら、よほど有名な番組だったらしく、英和辞典を含む複数の辞書に記載があったのでちょっと驚いた。そのひとつから引用しよう。

- a television programme that was popular in Britain and the US in the 1950s and 1960s. It showed members of the public who had been secretly filmed in funny or embarrassing situations. At the end of each section the person being filmed was told, 'Smile, you're on Candid Camera!'

この candid は、

- a candid photograph of someone is natural and informal and is taken without them knowing that they are being photographed
candid shots
(Macmillan Dictionary)

- (of a photograph of a person) taken informally, especially without the subject's knowledge.
From all the wedding phots, this looks the most natural, very candid and spontaneous.
The viewer is left under no illusion: these are not candid shots of real people living real lives.

ということで、この単語自体には「どっきりカメラ」のような隠し撮りや悪意を持った盗撮といった意味あいはないことになる。

追記（2018年4月）：今回の fly on the wall を直訳風に「壁にとまったハエ」とした翻訳があり、この言葉の印象から作品を評した新聞の書評を見つけた。誤解に基づく評ではないかと思い、翻訳のこわさを感じたので、取り上げてみた。
