ace in the hole 「最後の切り札」「奥の手」

このところ wall の出てくる表現を続けて取り上げていて、前回は hole in the wall について書いたが、尻取りの逆のような形で ace in the hole を連想したので触れてみたい。「ここぞという時まで取っておく切り札、決め手」という意味である。

日本語の「奥の手」に似ているが、英語では”切り札”を「奥」ならぬ「穴」に置いておくのかと思うとおもしろい。

そう考えたが、由来を見ると、ace はもちろんのこと hole もトランプ（ポーカー）に関係する言葉だとわかった。単純な「穴」ではなかったのである。

英語圏の辞典から引用しよう。

- A major advantage that one keeps hidden until an ideal time. The phrase originated in poker, in which an ace is the most valuable card. Primarily heard in US.
His embarrassing secret is my ace in the hole, and I plan to reveal it to everyone the next time he mocks me publicly.

この hole card はポーカーなどの「裏にして配るカード」のことで、さらに今回の ace ～ と同じく「切り札」「虎の子」の意味もあると辞書に書かれている。

- 1 : a card in stud poker that is properly dealt facedown and that the holder need not expose before the showdown
2 : something (such as a reliable advantage) that is held in reserve especially for use at a strategic moment

しかしなぜ hole なのか、ちょっと検索しただけではわからなかった。後日、もう少し調べてみよう。

もうひとつ、ace up one's sleeve も今回の表現と同じ意味になる。こちらは文字通りの「袖」のことかと思って調べると、

- have something up one's sleeve and have an ace up one's sleeve
Fig. to have a secret or surprise plan or solution (to a problem). (Alludes to cheating at cards by having a card hidden in one's sleeve.)
I've got something up my sleeve, and it should solve all your problems. I'll tell you what it is after I'm elected.
The manager has an ace up her sleeve. She'll surprise us with it later.

とあり、確かに「袖」ではあるが、同時にやはりカードゲームに関係があることがわかった。

余談だが、上で引用した Phrase Finder には、ace in the hole がカーク・ダグラス主演の映画のタイトルとして使われたという記述がある。

1951年の白黒映画で、調べてみると日本では「地獄の英雄」というタイトルで公開されている。なんだが凄い邦題だが、ダグラスは新聞記者を演じていて、あらすじを読むとなかなかおもしろそうな作品だ。

そして、映画・ドラマ化もされて話題になった横山秀夫の小説「クライマーズ・ハイ」の中で、主人公が新聞記者になるきっかけになった映画として描かれている、という記述が日本の「ウィキペディア」にあった。

「クライマーズ・ハイ」は私もずっと前に読んだが、まったく覚えておらず、へえっと思ったしだいである。
