「文字通り」でなくても使われる literally [注意したい単語・意外な意味]
このところ時間的な余裕がなく更新が滞ったままだが、そろそろ短くても何か書かねばと考えたので、literally を取り上げてみることにしよう。
きっかけは、以前書いた「『技術的に』ではない technically」というエントリに先日コメントをいただいたことだ。自分が昔書いたものを読み返していたら、同じように字義通りの意味から外れた使い方をする副詞の例として頭に浮かんだのである。
literally はまさに「文字通り」ということだが、元となる”文字”がなくても、単なる強調として（時にはまったく「文字通り」ではない場合にも）使われるケースにちょくちょくお目にかかるように感じている。
そう思って改めて辞書を引いてみたのだが、ちゃんと説明が出ていた。
- （強意語として）本当に、まったく、実際は
すでに強意的な表現をさらに強調するがしばしばルーズに使われ、用いても用いなくても同じ結果になることもある。規範的な立場からこの用法を不可とする人もあり、正式な文では使用を避ける：
The book was literally an eye-opener to me.
(ジーニアス英和大辞典)
ていねいな説明でこれに尽きているといえるが、個人的には用例があまりおもしろくない感じがする。そこで他の辞書も見ると、
- (informal) used to emphasize a word or phrase, even if it is not actually true in a literal sense:
I literally jumped out of my skin.
(OALD)
- used when you are describing something in an extreme way that cannot be true
When I told him the news he literally exploded.
(Macmillan Dictionary)
とあり、もっと大げさな言葉を使っている。こうした用例の方がより印象的だと思う。
また The American Heritage Dictionary は次のように書いており、こうした「文字通りではない”文字通り”」の使用は、ずっと前からあったことがわかる。
- Usage Note: For more than a hundred years, critics have remarked on the incoherence of using literally in a way that suggests the exact opposite of its primary sense of "in a manner that accords with the literal sense of the words." In 1926, for example, H.W. Fowler deplored the example "The 300,000 Unionists ... will be literally thrown to the wolves."
そして先の「ジーニアス」同様、こうした使い方を慎むようにと書いている英語圏の辞書もある。そのひとつを引用してもいいが、ふと思いたって、このブログを始めたばかりの頃に「ネイティブのための単語の使い方ガイド」というエントリで紹介した Troublesome Words という本を引っ張り出して見たら、この単語が取り上げられていた。少し引用しよう。
- All too often used as a kind of disclaimer by writers who mean, literally, the opposite of what they are saying.
（中略）
'Hetzel was literally born with a butcher's knife in his mouth' (Chicago Tribune)
'Our eyes were literally pinned to the curtains' (cited by Fowler).
（中略）
It should not need saying, but if you don't wish to be taken literally, don't use literally.

このように言葉のプロたちが憂えても、人目を引くような言葉で強調したがるのは人の常、”文字通りではない literally” を根絶するのは難しいのではないかという気がする。
