a tsunami of... 「怒涛の」「津波のように押し寄せる」

全米オープンでのセリーナ・ウィリアムズ選手について前回取り上げた meltdown は、日本では「炉心溶融、メルトダウン」の方で知られるはずだが、その原発事故をひき起こした tsunami はすでに英語になっている。そして、「津波」とは違う意味でも使われるようになっている。

手持ちの辞書を見ると、どれも「津波」の意味しか載せていなかったので、違う意味というより単に比喩と考えればいいのかもしれない。

しかしそれにしても、a tsunami of... の形で使われている下記のような例を見ると、地震と津波の国に生まれ育った私としてはやや当惑を感じてしまう。

- With the #MeToo movement sweeping the entertainment industry and expected to permeate other lines of work, a tsunami of complaints looks to send businesses insurance premiums skyrocketing.

とまどうだけで済めばいいが、

After the name is announced, a moment of silence hangs in the air as everyone processes what they just heard. Then, a tsunami of laughter rolls through the room. Order is only restored after the teacher threatens to break out her taser.

などといった例をみると、「笑い事」とは正反対の大災害を経験した国民のひとりとしては、正直いって心穏やかにはなれない。

「手持ちの辞書には載っていない」と書いたが、オンライン辞書で tsunami を引くと、「津波」と別の語義を立てているものもちゃんとあった。

- An arrival or occurrence of something in overwhelming quantities or amounts.
A tsunami of data pours into the CNBC newsroom every minute of every trading day.

- (figuratively) A large and generally unstoppable surge.
It set off a tsunami of debate among the more esoteric critics, who either loved it or hated it but could not ignore it.

もう少し狭い意味の語義を与えている辞書もある。

- an extremely large quantity of something bad
tsunami of: He described the government’s explanation as a tsunami of lies.
a disastrous situation that cannot be controlled

- We sometimes use tsunami metaphorically, to describe really destructive events.

ただ、こうした語義だと先の laughter に使った例にはそぐわない。やはりもっと広い意味で使うこともできるということだろう。

なお The American Heritage Dictionary は「津波」の意味しか載せていないが、由来の説明はていねいだった。

- Japanese : tsu, harbor + nami, wave (so called because tsunamis generally pass unnoticed on the open sea, causing a slight swell, but rise to cause damage in the shallow waters of harbors ).

私が英語を学び始めた頃、「津波」は tidal wave というと習った。しかしこれだと潮の満ち引きなどによる「高波」をも指すことになるそうで、後に seismic sea wave という方がいいと教わった。さらに後になってそのまま tsunami でいいと知ったが、日本語が英語に取り入れられたと喜んでいいものか、なんだか複雑な気持ちである。

そして a tsunami of... は日本語由来とあって、ちょっと頑張れば私も自分で使うことができる表現となりうるだろう。しかし実際はそうした気にはなれないのは、やはりこの言葉が災害と分かちがたく結びついている国に生まれ育ったからか、それとも単に私が旧いだけなのだろうか。

ところで津波と言えば、東日本大震災について書いたイギリス人ジャーナリストのノンフィクションを少し前に読んだ。日本で起きた謎の英国人女性死亡事件を描いた同じ著者の作品は、以前何度か取り上げたことがある（→たとえばこちら）。今回も力作だったので、機会があれば後日取り上げてみたい。
