驚愕！びっくりマーク乱発のトランプ大統領の声明 (exclamation-point-filled statement) [アメリカ政治]
サウジアラビアとの関係についてトランプ大統領がこのほど声明を出したが、まるでお得意のツイートを連想させるような書き方をした部分もあって、これが公式の文書かと驚いた、というより異様な感じすら受けた。
サウジアラビアの王室に批判的なジャーナリストが政府関係者によってトルコで殺害され、皇太子が関わっていたのではないかという疑惑が持ち上がっている。
しかし声明は、イランと対峙しアメリカの兵器を大量に購入しているサウジとの関係を、「アメリカ第一主義」の立場から重視するという内容だった。
CIAも調査している事件の真相がどうであれ、アメリカの国益にプラスになることをしているから不問に付す、と表明したといえそうだ。
声明が出たのを知って、原文を読む前にウェブの記事をいくつか眺めてみた。CNNの記事のひとつは、トップページの見出しが
- Trump sends the message that countries on America's side can literally get away with murder
というものだった。get away with murder とは「何をしてもおとがめなし」「やりたい放題」という意味のイディオムだが、これに literally をつけて、まさに文字通り「人を殺しても許される」と読める形にしている。
さらにBBCの記事を眺めていたら、

というくだりがあった。exclamation point は「感嘆符」ということだから、「大統領の声明はびっくりマークだらけ」ということになる。
そこでこの記事の最後に転載されている声明の原文に初めて目を通してみた。なるほど「！」マークがやたらとついている。ホワイトハウスの公式サイトで確かめようと探したら、下記に全文が載っていた。

声明は、冒頭部分からして異様である。

のっけから、いずれも感嘆符をつけた２つの短い文。
そして bloody という形容詞を使い、シリアのアサド大統領を肩書や敬称なしで dictator Bashar Assad と呼んでいる。確かにその通りなのかもしれないが、アメリカ大統領の公式声明ではめったにお目にかからない書き方ではと感じてしまった。
短い２文に続く７つのパラグラフのうち、４つの末尾に感嘆符がついている。そのひとつである最後の文はこれまた短い。
- They (注・Saudi Arabia) have worked closely with us and have been very responsive to my requests to keeping oil prices at reasonable levels ? so important for the world. As President of the United States I intend to ensure that, in a very dangerous world, America is pursuing its national interests and vigorously contesting countries that wish to do us harm. Very simply it is called America First!
これじゃいつものツイートと同じノリじゃないか、スタッフに任せずにトランプ本人が書いたのに間違いあるまい、と思ったのは私だけではないようで、ネットで見つけたロイター通信の記事は次のように書いていた。
- It's often assumed that statements from the US president are drafted and edited by writers, but Trump's most recent public release seems to read just like his tweets -- and the internet was quick to tear it apart.

One person was quick to point out the excessive number of exclamation marks used in such a short statement -- eight to be exact. This, he said, was almost certainly proof that Trump wrote it himself, given his love for that particular form of punctuation.

アメリカNBCのある記事は、声明に対するツイートの反応をまとめたものだが、そのタイトルにも下記のように「感嘆符だらけ」が入っていた。

書き方も書き方だが、アメリカの利益に合わない国は徹底的に排撃する、といわんばかりの内容も内容である。「アメリカ第一主義」ここに極まれり、という感じがする。
agitation と propaganda を合成した agitprop という言葉があるが、そんなアジ宣伝のような最高権力者の文面を公式サイトで見ているうちに、背筋がゾッとしてきた。
何だか既視感があるように思ったのだが、昔の映画やSF小説で描かれていた、ディストピア的な未来社会、オーウェル的な世界にそっくりに見えてきたのだ。私の過剰反応ならいいのだが。
以前、日本人のような非ネイティブにとって、トランプ大統領の英語は良きお手本になるのではないか、と書いたことがあるが、そんな無邪気なことは言っていられないのではないか、そうしたことも考えたくなるような今回の声明だった。
