広い範囲で雪 (swath) [ニュースと英語]
日本では週末にかけて各地で雪となった。欧米では先月から大雪のニュースが伝えられている。そうした英文記事でよく目にするのが a swath of... という表現である。
下記は週末の雪について報じる共同通信の英文記事からで、「ジャパン・タイムズ」紙のサイトに載っていたもの。
- A cold snap hit Tokyo and its surrounding areas Saturday, causing cancellations of more than 100 domestic flights to and from the capital.
The Meteorological Agency said up to 5 cm of snow was expected to fall in central Tokyo by 6 a.m. Sunday due to a cold air mass above a wide swath of the country’s east.

文脈からも「広範囲」というような意味だとあたりがつくが、辞書を見ると「（大鎌で草を刈った）ひと刈りの幅」「牧草地の刈り跡」「刈り倒された牧草の列」などとある。ここからもっと一般的な意味で使われるようになったのだろう。
もう少し実例をウェブで探してみよう。

上記の例では a swath of の後に地域が続いているが、雪や雨を続けることもできる。

英語圏の辞書にある定義や例文を見てみよう。幅よりも長さに焦点を当てた言葉のようだ。また比喩ということだろうか、土地や天候以外にも使えることがわかる。swathe という綴りもあるが、こちらは /sweɪð/ あるいは /swɑːð / で、swath の /swɑθ/, /swɔθ/ と似て非なる発音になる。
