「女性をモノとして見る」 objectify women, sexualize

前回、アジアの某航空会社が売春ツアーと受け取られかねない宣伝を出して批判を浴びたというニュースを取り上げたが、その中に objectification of women という言葉が出てきたので、こちらにも触れておきたい。

文脈から「女性をモノ扱いする」という意味だろうということは容易に想像がつく。前回と同じ引用では芸がないので、同じニュースを伝える別の記事から例をあげよう。

objectification を手持ちの英和辞典でひくと、「対象化」「客観化」などの訳語が載っている。しかしこれをそのまま今回の実例に当てはめようとすると何のことだかわからない。

動詞形である objectify を見ると、「客観的に見る」「具体化する」などのあとに、やっと「（人を）物として見る」「単なる物として扱う」という語義が出てくる。こんな風に辞書を引き直さないといけないとしたら不便で不親切だなと思ってしまう。

英語圏のオンライン辞書で objectify を見ると、やはりこの順で語義が並んでいるものが多いが、「オックスフォード」は「モノ扱い」の方を最初に挙げていた。

もうひとつ、今回の実例にあった sexualization (of women) と sexualize という言葉も、私の持っている英和辞典の多くが「性的特徴を与える」「男女の別を与える」などといった訳語を挙げているだけだった。

しかしここは「性的な意味あいで考える」とか「性の対象としてとらえる」というように解釈すべきだろう。オンライン辞書から引用しよう。

- To sexualize something or someone means to make them sexual or consider them in a sexual way.
Referring to children's friends as girlfriends and boyfriends sexualizes them.

また俗語中心の Urban Dictionary にはもっとあからさまな説明も載っていたが、その中では "to relate everything to sex" というのが、もっとも簡潔にして要を得ているのではないかと思った。
