リサイクルの上を行く upcycling （ケンブリッジ版「2019年の英単語」）

年末が近づくと、辞書出版社などが選ぶ Word of the Year が相次いで発表される。オンライン検索の頻度などに基づいて、その年を特徴づける単語を決めるものだ。ここ数年はトランプ大統領に象徴される政治・社会の変化を示す選定が続いたが、今年は環境問題に関係する言葉が目立っているようだ。

「オックスフォード」辞典は climate emergency、同じく辞書の大手「コリンズ」は climate strike という言葉をそれぞれ選んだ。

そして、Cambridge Dictionary が選んだのが upcycling という単語だった。upcycle の -ing 形だが、想像できるように up + recycle である（強勢は第一音節にある）。古いものを単純に再利用するのではなく、より価値を高めた形で再生させることをこの一語を表している。

1990年代には登場していたそうなので新語とはいえないが、頻繁に使われるようなったということは、これまた環境問題に対する意識の高まりを反映しているのだろう。

- The number of times upcycling has been looked up on the Cambridge Dictionary website has risen by 181% since December of 2011, when it was first added to the online dictionary, and searches have doubled in the last year alone.

なお引用しなかったが、上記の文のあとに環境活動家のグレタ・トゥーンベリさんに言及している。彼女は「タイム」誌の「今年の人」 Person of the Year に選ばれている。

英語圏の辞書から、upcycle, upcycling の定義と用例を引用しよう。「ケンブリッジ」の定義は個人的にはいまいちと感じたので、それ以外の辞書から取っている。「ウィキペディア」には creative reuse という別の言い方も載っている。

なお、オンライン辞書 Dictionary.com は existential を「今年の言葉」に選んだ。これは以前取り上げたことがあるが（→ こちら）、「実存」「存在」といった哲学的な意味というより、「人間の存亡に関わる」というようなニュアンスで使われる。こちらも環境問題、さらには頻発する銃撃事件など、人間とその社会の行く末に対する不安を背景にしている。

もうひとつ、アメリカの代表的な辞書 Merriam-Webster が選んだのは、性別を区別しない単数としての they である。これは、年頭に選定を発表する American Dialect Society が2015年の Word of the Year に選んでいて、以前触れたことがあるので、ご参考まで（→ こちら）。
