pandemonium 「大混乱、パニック」＋ pandamonium 「パンダ狂騒曲」

前回の panopticon からの連想で、pandemonium という単語について書いておきたい。意味に関連はないが、pan- で始まっていること、また昨今の新型コロナウイルスがらみで最近目にしたという共通点があるからだ。

私にとっては、「昔覚えたということを覚えている」というお寒いレベルの単語だが、最近読んだ英文で印象的な形で使われていたのを見て思い出した。新型コロナウイルスの影響で、中国人およびアジア人に対する差別的な出来事が世界各地で起きていることについて書いた Wikipedia の項目にあったものだ。

つまり、「中国のウイルス禍」を表すのに、pandemonium の -e- をわざと a に変え、パンダにひっかけた、というわけである。この見出しにした新聞社としてはお遊びのつもりだったのかもしれないが、謝罪を求める運動が起きたということは、ふざけすぎだと考える人たちがいた、ということだろう。

綴りを見ると何だか難しいそうな単語だが、由来を読むと実はそうでもなさそうだという気もしてくる。pan- は pandemic や前回の panopticon と同じく all を表すギリシャ語、そのあとは demon 「悪魔」と関係があるのだ。

日本語でも「鬼のような」とか「修羅場」という言葉があるが、こういう時に怪物的な存在に仮託するのは、文化や言葉が違っても似たような発想をするのだろうか。

また下記のように、17世紀のイギリスの作家ジョン・ミルトンが代表作「失楽園」で造った言葉だというので驚いた。

一見難しそうな単語だが、こうした語源なり、パンダとのこじつけなりで、多少とも親しみを持つことができそうだし、記憶の助けにもなるかもしれない。

なお、その panda にひっかけた pandamonium の方だが、綴りが似ているためか以前から使われているようだ。「パンダをめぐる大騒ぎ、熱狂」というような意味で、ユーモラスに使われているという。
