typoglycemia ～ヘンな綴りの文でも意味がわかる不思議 [英語のトリビア]
前回書いた trypophobia に続く「ヘンな英単語」として、何となく綴りが似ている typoglycemia を取りあげてみよう。スペリングが正しくないのに、読めば正しく理解できるという現象を指す言葉だ。
というだけでは何のことかわからないと思うので、論より証拠、ウェブで見つかった簡潔な実例として、
- Yuo're albe to raed tihs.
というものがあった。
文字が入れ替わって綴りは破綻しているが、これが You're able to read this. であることはすぐにわかると思う。
実は日本語でも同様の現象が見られる。富山の老舗菓子店が、わざと、
- みまなさに だじいな おらしせ。
で始まる 日本版 typoglycemia の広告をつくり、大当たりした、という記事がネットで見つかった。正しい文が何かを書く必要はあるまい。
この広告には、小さい字で「ちみなに この ぶんしょう の じんゅばん も ばなれい ように いかれえて います。」とも書かれていて、うまいのもだと思った。
日本語では、そのままカタカナにした「タイポグリセミア」として紹介されているようだ。わかりやすく意味を伝える日本語の呼称をつけるのは困難、ということなのだろう。
英単語の方だが、オンライン辞書を見てもほどんと収録したものがなかった。さすがに Wikipedia は項目を立てていて、
- Typoglycemia is a neologism for a purported recent discovery about the cognitive processes involved in reading text. The word is a portmanteau of "typo", for typographical error, and "hypoglycemia".
The principle is that readers can comprehend text despite spelling errors and misplaced letters in the words. It is an urban legend and Internet meme that appears to be correct.

といった説明が続いているが、実例なしに先にこれを読んだのでは、なかなかイメージが湧かないのではと思う。
ネットには、英文を入れるとタイポグリセミアに変換するサイトも複数あったので、試してみてはいがかだろうか。
この現象がどうして起きるのか、またどうすれば成立しやすいかという研究も行れわているという。後者について目に留まったものを箇条書きにすると、
- 1) Short words are easy.
2) Function words (the, be, and, you etc.) stay the same.
3) Of the 15 words in this sentence, there are 8 that are still in the correct order.
4) Transpositions of adjacent letters (e.g. porbelm for problem) are easier to read than more distant transpositions (e.g. pborlem).
5) None of the words that have reordered letters create another word (wouthit vs witohut).
6) Transpositions were used that preserve the sound of the original word (e.g. toatl vs ttaol for total).
7) The text is reasonably predictable.

人間の脳は、宇宙と並んで the final frontier と呼ばれることがあるほど謎を秘めているが、こうした現象は、その一端を素人にも垣間見せてくれるように思う。
ところで今回のエントリには、何箇所か日本語のタイポグリセミアをちりばめてある。バレバレですぐにわかったのだとしたら、私の腕前はまだまだだということになるだろう。
