pareidolia ～火星の表面に人の顔が！ [英語のトリビア]
このところ続けて、何かしら「ヘンなこと」を指す英単語を取り上げているが、今回は pareidolia について書く。月でウサギがモチをついていたり、壁のシミが人の姿に見えたりと、本来はただの模様なのに、まるで何かの具体的なイメージがあるように感じる心理的な現象を表す。
前回の typoglycemia は、綴りが正しくないのに問題なく文の意味をとらえることができるというところがヘンだったが、今回の「パレイドリア」も、これまた人間の脳とは不思議なものよとつくづく感じさせる現象だ。
この「パレイドリア」の例として有名なのは、火星の「人面岩」だろう。探査衛星が撮影したのは40年も前のことになるが、当時あちこちで取り上げられ、少年だった私も驚いてしまった。
人の顔のように見えるのはまったくの偶然あるいは錯覚だと頭ではわかっていても、あまりの見事さに、いま見ても感心してしまう。
この人面岩は火星の Cydonia という地域にあり、その名前で Wikipedia が項目を立てている。その中に "Face on Mars" という小項目が設けられていて、問題の写真も載っているので見たことがない人はご覧いただきたいが、記述の中に今回の単語も出てくる。
