- The "infodemic" around covid-19, declared by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in February, is not the world's first outbreak of misinformation.
("Fake news is fooling more conservatives than liberals. Why?" The Economist June 3, 2020)

- ...today's infodemic appears to be spreading more easily among the world's conservative than its liberals.
(ibid.)

- Structural shifts may explain why conservative voters seem to be more prone to the infodemic, and why conservative leaders have more reason--and are more likely--to undermine reliable sources.
(ibid.)

- I think the misinformation - call it infodemics - is actually causing panic and fear in many places. From the start of our daily press briefing we have said a lot about it and we will continue to really talk about it but not only talk about it and ask for the international community to act but we're taking practical measure too, working with Google, working with Facebook and working with Amazon, Tencent and so on to help in addressing this
misinformation.
(Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Press Conference 21 February 2020)

- Blend of information + epidemic
1. (informal) An excessive amount of information concerning a problem such that the solution is made more difficult.
2. (informal) A wide and rapid spread of misinformation.
(Wiktionary)

- A surfeit of information about a problem that is viewed as being a detriment to its solution.
What is more, the information epidemic - or ‘infodemic’ - has made the public health crisis harder to control and contain.
(Oxford Dictionaries)

- Infodemic (a portmanteau word from information and epidemic) is the outpouring of often unsubstantiated media and online information relating to a crisis. The term was coined in 2003 for the SARS epidemic, but has also been used to describe the current proliferation of news around coronavirus.
("Social change and linguistic change: the language of Covid-19" Oxford University Press April 9, 2020)
