大文字の B で始まる Black の使用が増えている （民主党副大統領候補にハリス氏） [ニュースと英語]
「黒人」を black で表す場合、大文字で始めて Black とすることがアメリカのマスメディアを中心に広がっている。アメリカ大統領選挙で、民主党の副大統領候補にカマラ・ハリス氏が選ばれたが、それにちなんでこの表記について取り上げてみたい。
バイデン元副大統領がハリス氏を running mate に選んだ今回の決定についての記事では、例えば、
- Joe Biden has named Kamala Harris as his running mate, making the California senator the first Black and South Asian American woman to run on a major political party's presidential ticket.
"I've decided that Kamala Harris is the best person to help me take this fight to Trump and Mike Pence and then to lead this nation starting in January 2021," the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee wrote in an email Tuesday.

ネットで調べると、黒人を表すときには大文字で始めて Black としよう、という主張は以前からあったが、具体的にそれを導入したのはアメリカのAP通信社で、今年６月のことだった。
小文字 (lowercase) の black は色を表し、人種・文化として黒人を表すときは uppercase とする、というものだ。当時のAPの記事から引用しよう。
- The Associated Press changed its writing style guide Friday to capitalize the “b” in the term Black when referring to people in a racial, ethnic or cultural context, weighing in on a hotly debated issue.
The change conveys “an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among people who identify as Black, including those in the African diaspora and within Africa,” John Daniszewski, AP’s vice president of standards, said in a blog post Friday. “The lowercase black is a color, not a person.”

また引用はしないが、アメリカで高まりを見せた人種差別抗議行動が、今回の表記変更の背景にあったということも書かれている。
またこの記事では、白人についても小文字で始めるかどうかを決めると書いているが、ちょうど一か月後に、white と小文字で始める従来の表記は変えないとAPは表明した。次はその説明記事から。

The AP said white people in general have much less shared history and culture, and don’t have the experience of being discriminated against because of skin color.

APが自社記事での表現・表記法について取り決めた「APスタイルブック」は、表記の手引きとして広く一般的に使われていることから、これにならうメディアが増えたようだ。他の実例はいくらでも見つけることができるので、これ以上引用はしない。
ただこの表記を使っていないメディアもあり、例えば BBC は同じ英語圏でもイギリスということもあるのだろうか、今回のハリス氏についての次の記事にもあるように、

なお、アメリカの黒人については African-American という言い方がよく使われるが、ハリス氏は父親がジャマイカ、母親はインドの出身で、アジア系でもあるといえそうだ。
人種的に多彩なアメリカを象徴するような人であるが、オバマ氏が立候補した時のような、"not black enough" 「黒人度が足りない」 という批判が今回も出なければいいのだが、と考えてしまう。
さらについでだが、何かの単語を大文字で始めてその意味を強調することがある。Cambridge Dictionary には、with a capital A, B, etc. という表現が見出し語として立てられていて、

He's trouble with a capital T!
とある。例文は、「ヤツは厄介そのものだ」「とんでもない厄介なヤツだ」という感じだろう。
