switcheroo 「どんでん返し」「ちゃぶ台返し」 [アメリカ政治]
日本にいて英語とつきあっている者として、私はスラングの類にはほとんど興味がないが、それでも時おり「これはおもしろいな」と思う言葉に出会うことがある。トランプ大統領が、新型コロナウイルス関連の追加経済対策に一転して署名したという記事で目にとまった switcheroo も、そんな例といえるだろう。
トランプ氏は、この法案に盛り込まれている現金給付金の額を引き上げるよう求めて突如署名を拒んでいたもので、成立が遅れればさまざまな悪影響が出ると懸念されていた。態度を一変させて署名したことで安堵が拡がったが、トランプ流のパフォーマンスだとして批判も大きいようだ。
そうした視点から書かれたCNNの解説記事に、共和党の議員が使った言葉として引用されていた。

英和辞典には、「（米俗）（態度・立場・性格など）一変すること、急変」「予期せぬ（突然の）変化」「どんでん返し」といった訳語が載っている。今回の事例には合わないだろうが、内容によっては「ちゃぶ台返し」が訳語として使えるケースもありそうだ。なお強勢は -oo に置かれる。
もちろん switch と関係があり、辞書には由来について switch + -eroo in the sense ‘unexpected’ とあり、1930年ごろから使われているという。
さらに辞書を見ると -eroo は接尾辞で「他の名詞に付けて誇張・親しさ・滑稽味などを表す」ということで、buckeroo 「カウボーイ」「男、やつ」に由来するらしいという。へえ、と思う。
英語圏の辞書にある定義や例文を見ると、上記の例のように the old switcheroo という言い方、また動詞との組み合わせでは pull the switcheroo としてよく使われるようだ。

deceptive とか sneaky という言葉が定義に使われているので、あまりいい意味で使われるものではないことがうかがえる（このへんは英和辞典だけを使っているとわからない）。また組み合わされる old も、「古い」ではなく「いつもの」「例の」というニュアンスで意味を強めているのだろう。トランプの手法について使うのにふさわしい言葉という感じがする。
「態度の豹変」とか「ひっくり返す」を示す単語・表現としては、flip-flop や about-face あるいは upend、さらに turn upside down とか upset the applecart などが頭に浮かんだが、いつか機会があったら switcheroo も使ってみようかな。

1か月前ほど英語の単語を検索していて貴殿のブログに出会いました。いつも単語について深く解説くださりありがとうございます。以来、新しくコメントが更新されるのを楽しみにしています。The Economist の鹿についての記事も、注目すべき点はここだったのか！っと思わず膝を打ちました。日本のコロナに対する記事についてはダイヤモンドプリンセス号の対処について、確かにあの判断は正しかったと,この記事で気づいた次第です。
